"Chahlie" The Fly River Turtle - Watch me grow

Beautiful FRT pics!!. I'm relieved you separated the turt from the fishes. I lost an AUL to a FRT bite and wouldn't wish such a loss on anyone else.

You've got more horror stories than I have good ones :(

Is "We" you and the missus?

Yes she is great! I'm always traveling for work so she spends more time than I do with them sometimes. Luckily she loves fish as much as I do. She actually loves them more probably, if it were up to her we would keep every last pup...and have a goat, and a llama, oh and poney she loves those too ;)

I listen to your recommendations and have spent a lot of time reading what you have shared Oddball! I saw what you went through with the wedge bite from the AUL, I also learned from you that they can be nasty to one another. That ruled out the possibility of a pair of turtles for me, even if the turtle specific aggression can take longer to develop.

Thank you for the suggestions on hardness, diet and temperature. I'm trying to keep everything in ideal parameters. So far it appears to be in great health and has learned to accept hand feeding which is a treat!

What specific gravity would you recommend? I've been far short of brackish, but adding a decent amount like I would for african cichlids.

I kept my turts in barely brackish conditions. SG 1.002 - 1.005. I went to 1.008-1.010 a couple of time to combat respiratory issues after relocations. My main focus on water chemistry was in maintaining a high pH of 8.0-8.5. I was able to maintain the high levels through the use of bulk limestone (I used ammonite fossils but, Texas holey rock will work as well) and aragonite rice/sand. I just ensured they received vitamin D complexes so their systems could make use of the available calcium.

He looks great! I'm sure he will do very well for you! At least throw some small schooling fish in there for some extra color and movement! I liked having giant danios and different small barbs in with my guy.

Thank you for the input! I was thinking some sort of livebearer that would reproduce and he could snack on when he was able to catch them. Do you have any ideas of schooling fish that breed and would be good for this purpose? Guppies or mollies maybe?

Your FRT looks great in your profile picture!

I kept bait shiners in with the FRTs. The turts eventually ran them down and ate them. Funny thing is that some of the shiners avoided the turts long enough to spawn in the tanks. There were several occasions where I saw 1/4-1/2" shiners darting around the tanks. The FRTs ignored the young until they were around an inch or so long.

This is perfect. Easy, cheap and readily available. Thank you Oddball Oddball
