Changed filter?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
first you should only clean filters with fish tank water.... two check your ammonia and nitrates.... three soft water fish dont like salt

ok little confused on nitrate and ammonia problems? i have a 120 gallon tank i only took out 30 gallons at most leaving 90 gallons of water in the tank. The filter was a recently used filter of a friend of mine of a stabillized healthy tank and all i did was a warm water rinse, and i cleaned all the waste out of the tank which would cause the amonia? and used cycle and salt whe setting it back up? I have a buddy at a LFS that is going to test my water and give me the proper chemicals and treatments for the tank for the fish to survive what are the ods of these fish making it under these circumstances?

If they've been dry for more than an hour or so then the bacteria is dead and it won't do any good. If you have another tank with more than one filter you can use one of them.

I don't think the salt is going to cause any problems... But you left very little bacteria in your tank while taking off the old filters and adding a clean filter.

Yes, check the ammonia, but under your circumstances I am all but 100% sure that your tank is cycling. Get Prime it's the quickest way to help. Don't feed the fish much if anything for a while.

Who knows the odds.. It depends on the ammonia level and what the health of the fish was in the first place.. amoung other things.

no i dont have another tank... this sucks here i was thinking i was doing my fish a justice by providing better filtration for them and come to find out i may be putting there lives at risk! if i get the treatments in the tank tonite will they be ok? its been less than 24 hours with the tank set up that way? My buddy at the LFS is giving me a bottle of prime thats not a big issue, and he is gonna check my water levels as well to make sure that is the problem.

ok so what you are telling me is you switched up the filter you had with your friend's that has been running in a good tank. so it had live biological bacteria already living in it? if this is the case and you rinsed it with warm sink? water and not fish tank water then you most likely killed the biological bacteria in the filter.. between the water change and the filter rinse this will cause an ammonia spike in your tank and cause it to go through a mini cycle. salt is not good soft water fish because they come from a completely salt free enviornment. yes salt will heal fins ect but also stress fish if you use it alot because the salt molecules stay in the water. ok so as for treatments i think its called bio cycle or something like that.. its used for instant cycling tanks and they keep it in the fridge at your lfs. get enough for the whole tank.. warning its not cheap. you could also let someone hold your fish for you till the tank settles down.... before you do anythgin buy tester kits for ammonia*, nitrate*, ph and water hardness. for now get ammonia and nitrate and test your water before you buy anything

well said danh..

g_ morin make sure you test your water first to see if this is the problem. if you ask me i think we found it ;) danh you know i dont like salt ehehehe

if this is the problem and you buy the LIVE bacteria they sell in the fridges at you LFS and you get enough you may be ok.. but nothing is deff..

you were doing something good for your fish.. you just made a few mistakes while doing it.. it happens to the best of us

if the filter drys out it will kill the bacteria and if you rinse it under the sink it will also kill your bacteria.. make sure you use tnak water when cleaning

well i dont know about live bacteria but i do know he will give me all the required treatreatments for the tank so hopefully all will be good, and i would love to give them to someone else to hold but one frind his fish are way to big and the other only has a 55 gallon not gonna work awith all my fish ill just ahve to keep a close eye on them and hope for the best

The Prime will detoxify ammonia and nitrite, so it won't hurt your fish, but it will still be available for the cycle to complete and to get back to normal. That's really all you NEED. Bio Spira is the good live bacteria, and it wouldn't hurt.

I had a cascade 1000 that I got for free. I wouldn't use just that to filter a 120g with pbass. You should probably put the other two back on it anyway.
