channa ornatipinnis grow out

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
now they are well established in the new tank i thought i would do a quick video of them.

next time ill try and get them feeding. at the moment they still seem to be ok as a group, largest is about 6" and guards his cave. i have seem him/her with one of the smaller ones doing some interesting behaviour and also seen them hanging around the top as if testing nesting sites but we will see. I keep expecting to find a beaten snakehead up there.

looking proper now mate, they will start to colour up a lot more as they approach 8-10 inch now, my male is looking awesome now!

Looking good shane , definitely looks to be some dominant behaviour coming from a couple of them hopefully they'll get the pecking order sorted and the peace will last , obviously fry from a breeding pair would change that so divder at the ready on that one I think :D

cheer both.

the colour is really starting to pop on the light substrate and green plants.

if a pair forms a local shop has some tank set up for individual fish like discus and stuff, so they keeping changing the fish around (large main tank with individual show fish in the little tanks) they said i can stick them in three of them if needed till i work out what i'm gonna do.

would be cool to keep the group going but not sure that will happen

seen tapeworms hanging out of one of them today, treatment ordered :(:(

new video taken a few days ago, still growing no breeding yet but still going strong as a group.

time has come to split the group, not because they all destroying each other but i need to downsize for the new house.

plan is to keep two, the two that seem to be together the most and reduce the tank size slightly (not as tall) then through the year i'll play with water levels see if i can get them to spawn.

will keep you updated

well i didnt downsize cause that was too easy, what i did do was buy two 48x 20x 15 tanks and build a rack hahaha so they have the same size tank (250ltrs) but because the filter system on the old i could drop the water level now i can.

so the old tank (too deep)

new tanks before cleaning and building

the rack they came with, it was horrible and in very bad shape so opted to build a new one

new one last night

mrs started to get on my back because of all the mess hahaha so this morning i got on it

and all up and running, still needs some work but that can be done in slow time. i didnt like the SH being in a plastic container for too long

also got some new wood, and ill be doing some more planting in there to get it back to how it was. i think the snakeheads will enjoy it now i can mess with the depth of the tank.

finally a couple of pictures of them before i strip the tank down

anyway more pics to follow and once the tanks is properly running ill add a new video

a few days later

still a bit of fettling to do and will be adding some more plants and cover over the next few weeks but much better set up now

well tank has all settled down, and they enjoying the new set up. added a few more plants and ordered some better lights as i hate the strips they to bright and the light is wasted. spots should be here in a couple of days.
