Channa Pulchra setup

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Hey, right im very confused after a quick trip to get some bloodworm at the lfs, (Friday treat), I told them i was keeping my channa at 20 as it is subtropical, they then got all upset at me, saying i should keep him at 25 as then he'll be much happier as even if wild channa pulchra "supposedly" live in cooler waters, he is captive bred and so used to tropical temps. Theyre telling me to increase the temp. What should I do?

25C is fine for the summer, but 20C is best for winter months. There are countless reports of subtropical fish being kept at tropical temps year round. They always end with infections leading to a dead fish.
I doubt that the parents were kept at tropical temps year round because the change in seasons (temp) is what stimulates breeding in most cases.

I keep mine at 22-23, I read that they get really stressed and aggressive at higher temps

Ok, i'll keep them at 20 for now, and increase over summer. I read that as well about both aggression and breeding, hence keeping the temp lower to keep stress lower. I only asked them because he's been sitting in one place most of the time and I was worried. They said i shoul turn the temp up to make him more active and then I could put a couple of the larger cichlids or armoured cats in with him.... Thanks for the advice - I would rather trust the opinions of people who have kept them than the opinions of a shop that appear to not know much.... (This one girl has given me bad advice before as well, but today she said i could have some goldfish as tankmates for my sh...)

Put a thermometer in the tank last night.... Realised to my horror it read 15 degrees..... After bit of investigation, discovered id forgotten to plug the heater back in after unplugging for maintenance about a week and a half - two weeks ago..... No wonder he's been lethargic.... Temp back up at 21, now dashing all round the tank, charging and flaring at me and going for the fingers(that were just out of the tank) rather than the pellet i had just dropped in. Think i had a very lucky escape then :-/

I have done that before! I was so annoyed with myself, but don't worry he will be fine, at least he is sub tropical and the weather in the wild isn't as consistent as in an aquarium so they are ok with changes now and then :) as long as he's acting ok now then I think your all good :)

Glad he's ok :) and a lot of people have said about snakeheads biting their owners but neither my micropeltes or my pulchra ever attempted to bite me... I must be lucky or taste bad I guess lol
