Characin update 3/16

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Amazing characins there. Really envious of all types of wolves you are having. LOL!

Edit: Do you have a Curupira there? Would it be a good mix to your collection?

Thank you guys for the kind words. I enjoy these fish every day, it's nice to share with others that appreciate them.

No Curu. No intentions on getting one..... I love the high back wolves. To me the other wolves just look funny sitting next to them. I've experienced enough issues trying to make all the wolves happy. The one that really irritated me was the Intermedius. Housed with larger wolves he wouldn't eat. Smaller wolves he picked on. The "Green Lac" is the same way, add another wolf and he'll go off food. I don't have time for this. My main involvement in the hobby is rays. They are and always will be number one, but along with that comes the ability to keep some of the neatest fish in existence with them (Characins) since they seem to mix so well.

Lucy is massive. No doubt. Pics don't do her justice.

Still to this day I can't get over the Tanzinian Tigers. Such a beautiful, graceful, awe inspiring fish. I can't wait to see how big one will get in the 750.

I just hope I can get a home bought soon so I can build some REAL tanks for these things.......

Your Tatf has some nice fangs.. My poor VATF teeth are barely showing.. My fish buddies here call her granny.. It's not that she doesn't have teeth just not very visible and like little spikes compared to yours.

Wolves and rays really do mix well?

Just seen a juvenile royal marble motoro at a nearby LFS...LOL!

But I am worried the ray will outcompete my African arowana in getting those food bits on the bottom.

Any particular species of wolf you feel works better in a community? Or any species that don't normally work?

Vs have dinky teeth compared to Tatf. With similar sized fish it seems like the Ts are at least twice the size. They seem to me to be a cross between Goliath and Vittatus as far as looks. As far as temperament they are king of the Tigers in my opinion. Like I said, I couldn't keep either with my Ts, they just shredded them.

As far as the Wolves in community settings - the only worry was the ones that didn't eat while mixed with others. Very little aggression. The Mbiguas seem to really enjoy each others company. The Australis in the big tank is always side by side with the Iguaza/Mbigua that resides in the big tank with him. I had issues with Gold wolves attacking/killing eachother, then when moved several were eaten by Aros. When put with smaller fish the golds ate them right away. NOT a fan of these wolves.....

I like how the Tatf, if dominant, grows trailers on his/ her fins. Seeing pics of yours are making those my favorite atf, though I'm not into atf like that, i like the looks of Gatf but not the attitude that is reported, were as Vatf seem to have the attitude id want from a g. The tatf is number one now from your pics and reports of your experience. The iguaza in the big tank really dwarfs the australis now, they were the same size not to long ago lol. And lucy looks so brutish, very nice looking fish. You say the iguazas like each others company, do you notice similar behavior with the larger one? And i was just gonna ask why not get a curupira lol, thats the only wolf you haven't got that is available basically. The dorados are looking good. And i was just thinking while looking through the pics, do you think having one armatus instead of the pair would make it calm down? Maybe this can be an option for you to try. The lince looks like its the largest fish in there now too. Really a beautiful cat. and what do you keep with the gold wolf now? hows its growth?
