Good color, cheap price, and good stuff all around! It's homemade.

If you're not into making your own stuff, try this guy: http://www.bestflake.com/

He's local and I will be going down to his shop to buy some stuff. His prices are insanely cheap, and his ingredients are listed on almost every item on the website (although he told me he's still working on the website) and he doesn't use preservatives.

The food is designed for gamefish, so it doesnt have much in terms of color enhancers. It does have a decent amount of protein, you can check the website for ingredients and the different grades available. The only thing i noticed about it, is if you feed alot at one time it makes your water smell like the food for a little bit.

See if you can get a sample from somewhere to see if your fish will take it, if they don't you will be stuck with a whole lot of trout chow..lol.

I was unable to find a nutritional analysis or ingredient list on any of the commercial foods. All of the places near me only sell 50 lb sacks and won't sell lose by pound. If anyone knows where to get samples of this, please let me know.

If you want color enhancers, just feed them some foods high in beta carotene. If it's orange, chances are your fish will have benefits to their color from it.

these seem interesting, but the fact that the list of ingredients isn't on there makes it hard to recommend...seems good on $$$ if 50 lb bags are necessary

Not quite sample size, but 5lbs is better than 50lbs. Only out $7 if they don't like it.

Where?
Krill seems to b the most expensive food I buy. Im paying $9 for 8oz.

I believe horiyoshi is in asia. The asian store by me sells frozen pounds of krill for $3. (14 oz packages are mixed in as well)

The site that e36 posted has krill meal- 10 lbs for $2.21. As soon as he gets back to me on nutritional information, I'll probably order a few bags. Time to whip up some fish food!

Just got the email back from the guy:

Krill Protein Meal

Ingredients:

Dried Krill

Analysis:

Min. Crude Protein -- 60%
Min. Crude Fat -- 8%
Max. Ash -- 20%
Max. Moisture -- 9%

Only thing is shipping is $14 to residential addresses. Guess he doesn't do flat rate priority mail.

$18 per pound for fish food...Do you feed yourself anything that expensive?

I quit buying frozen fish food when I realized $17 per pound for silversides were worse quality than bait. It turned out to be cheaper to buy minnows from Gander Mountains bait shop than to buy frozen food from Petsmart. In the end, I found that human quality frozen food was cheaper than the frozen fish food. Shrimp is $5 per pound, Talapia is $4 per pound, and flounder is $2.50 per pound (Florida market prices).

This isn't as cheap as the purina stuff, but it's a decent quality and fairly cheap.
