Chemical Filtration..is it really neccesary?

What's aged water?

the only time i ever use chemical filtration is in my hospital tank after a quarantine in order to get medication out.
i also use it whenever I start a new tank... particularly a second hand tank. I dont really have a reason for this.. it just makes me feel better.

I use canister filters for biological filtration on tanks over 40g. Otherwise, I use HOB filters. My canisters are only cleaned out every 4 months or so but if you're using it for mechanical filtration I suggest rinsing the material in there often, especially with something as dirty as a turtle. You'll still need to do huge water changes very often too.

When I kept them, I used a river tank set up. See the last 2 tanks in my sig for a pic.

so in canister filters I only rinse the media and not change every few months?

mystix212; what does it mean by a filter burning out? breaking?

Step 1: Find a MFKer in your area
Step 2: STALK HIM! (If it her, just go up and ask)
Step 3: Once he get all creeped out, ask him to make a custom filtration system for you with automatic water changes, drip systems, wet/dry, sump, etc.

Really, get the right filter for that guy or at least invest in a drip system and pay the utility bill.

so you guys dont use activated carbon? Ive got 2 ac 70s with sponge, carbon, and bio media, would i be better off with just sponge and more bio?

Some experts claim that the carbon also removes growth inhibiting hormones from the water. This IS possible but I question if it's enough to replace the lost bio-media. Chemical filtration has it's place but I feel that it's only needed occasionally rather than continuiously.

So do I need to replace the media in canister filters?
and how does a filter burn out.

Like I said, instead of the carbon I use filter floss to "polish" the water, in my filters. When it gets dirty, I toss & replace.

ok thanks pufferpunk..i couldn't understand you, sorry.

what is filter floss though? biological?

Mechanical
