Chemical Filtration..is it really neccesary?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
thanks, so keep biological..throw away mechanical right?!

Right, although biological does need to be rinsed before it starts getting clogged.

Agree'd. You know I cant remeber the last time I even used carbon in my filters.

Agreed. Carbon is for special situations, but you don't need it to filter your tank.

I am rinsing my biological media everyday..but is that too often?

Yes, there is no chance for good bacteria to develop on the media.

I think your confused. Keep mechanical, add bio and apparently throw away chem (save for future use)

ok thanks pufferpunk..how about rinsing once a month?! it's in a turtle tank though..

and fish eat fish..ok, keep everything then right?! since I will not be using chemical media..
what do you mean by add bio media? do I throw away the ones currently in the filter?

If you have a good prefilter(coarse sponge) theres really no need to rinse out the biological media at all unless there starting to be a build up of debris. Only rinse out the prefilter when it starts to get clogged, same with the filter wool that polishes the water.

prefilter is the mechanical stuff right? in my case(40i) a white stringy cartridge.
How do I know it is getting clogged? Does the water come out non-smoothly, or colored?

I think for the most part everyone can agree, that we really don't use carbon unless for those special situations. Definitely invest in more bio media!
