Chemical Filtration..is it really neccesary?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
if you have the money to burn and an effort to replace the activated carbon regularly then why not,but still its a case to case basis...before i just used the ordinary charcoals that has no chemicals in it,because there are some charcoals that has chemicals that is used to make the coals burn faster-JASON

i'm not gonna use chemical on my filters..

for the filstar..i took off the micro-filtration 9pack..the filter comes with one anyways so..
i will be getting sh*t loads of bio media!

how often should I rinse the filstar coarse and fine foam?

when the flow rate starts to slow down...how long that will take depends on your tank set up.

ok..it probably won't be long until I throw out the micro.lol
what mechanical media can I use on the XP1(in place of the micro)

Any kind of large cell polyester foam youd like. (large cell = larger holes.) Most LFS's have sheets of it in stock you can cut pads out of to fit the XP.

sorry mispost..

thanks..i'll check out some foam on drsfostersmith then..

or would the filstar coarse and fine foams do a good job with the mechanical?
I do have a whisper 40i in the tank already..that might do a good job with the mechanical on the left side of the tank..

Once the canisters running I'd scrap the internal filter. You wont need it. Yes the factory pads are OK but like I've said...with a turtle in the tank that fine pads going to clog VERY quickly.

Really? will the filstar be powerful enough to get clean all 4 corners of the tank?
If so..I would love it since the internal filter takes up a little space..in the tank

do you think I should still get a mr. cleaner gravel cleaner? to clean under the rock?

also, so all the pads that come with the filter suck?! the micro, coarse, and fine foam!
i'm getting confused so can you give me a specific mechanical media?

It will with the powerhead pre-filter...yes
