Hi,

About 2 months ago I noticed a bunch of eggs on some java moss. Apparantly one of the shrimp dropped her eggs. Over the course of 2 months I been seeing more and more clutches off eggs dropped. Just today I noticed yet another bunch of eggs that one of the shrimp dropped and one of the other shrimp was eating it. I dont know why this is happening, but its happened about 6 times now.

I got about 40 shrimp maybe, and theres some small pond snails as well. The 1st time it happened, I thought it might have been stress, or perhaps the shrimp was young and a 1st time mother, and dropped the eggs. Like I say, theres no predators to stress the shrimp out, and these are the only reasons Ive heard why shrimp may drop their eggs.

Water is fine:

Ammonia 0
NitrIte 0
NitrAte 10
Hardness - Hard
PH - 7.8
Temp - 79

The only thing I can think of, is the shrimp must be like humans. When they are saddled and are producing eggs, I figure they must have a time period to mate, and if they dont the eggs are flushed rather than being fertilized and transfered to the tail. Theres plenty of males too, so I dont get it. Im getting really frustrated and disappointed, because like I say, its been about the 6th time this has happened. I been waiting several months for them to breed and I have not gotten one spawn.

Can anyone shed some light on this issue? Could it be a fact that shrimp will flush eggs if they dont mate? Thanks

What are you feeding them? Check the label, if it contains copper, change to somehting that does not. Adult shrimp can handel the copper, but eggs and fry can not. Ken

I feed fish flakes, algae wafers and hikari cichlid pellets. I crush the wafers and pellets really fine into a dust. The cichlid pellets do contain copper sulfate, which I have heard is OK. Its the copper compound that you should avoid. I will see, I will stop feeding the hikari pellets and jsut give flakes and algae wafers and see how it goes. I had like 8 females berried and I have now 2 of them. All the others loss their eggs. So I gotta wait for them to produce more.

what size tank are they in? not that it really matters if the tank is over like 3 gallons yer good
any water movement in the tank? again not that they "need" it but i thought of it so i figured id as
is the tank next to a tv? - ive had a few of my tanks set up near/infront of the tv.. i have no proof but i dont think fish like tv especially in the dark
any real plants? again not that it really matters as long as they have food and something to hangout on they are pretty much set but i figured id ask

Its a 10 gallon. The tank is not near a TV but its next to another tank kinda. I have a few live plants, mostly moss and I threw in some pennywort to float on top, but a very small piece.

Not alot of water movement. I have an Aqueon 10 filter on it, when the water gets a little low there is a slight current in the middle of the tank, but its not bothering the shrimp. I also got a pice of manzanita driftwood, which they like alot.

sounds like you dont have a male. males are almost colorless and stay smaller than the females. the shape of their shell on their tail is also different, with the females having what almost looks like wings that cover their swimmer legs. males have a streamlines "shrimp" looking shell.

There is males. The males I are mostly clear with just a hint of red. The females are bigger and red. The male/female ratio is pretty even. They arent snail eggs either. The snail eggs are clear and slimy and usually laid on the glass. The shrimp eggs are bigger and yellow in color, and thats what I am seeing. I see saddled females, and then when I notice dropped eggs, I see that the female is no longer saddled. So it means she expelled the eggs from her body. But for some reason they dont end up on the tail.

it means they are infertile. female cherries wont hold onto their eggs unless they are fertile. the only other thing i can think of is that your shrimp tank might have too many shrimp? how big is the tank they are in? breeding goes way down if the tank is overcrowded

bump, did you figiure this out? im planning to breed some.
