choker chains on dogs?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
halti "collars" that go over the muzzle work much better IME than choke chains. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EyUrTP3XLp4
ive found body harnesses are pretty useless for training because your putting the points around the strongest part of the dogs body giving the dog more pull where as the halti removes the leverage because is focuses on the weakest part of the dogs body to prevent pulling.

but choke chains are ok if used correctly and from as soon as they walk with a lead. not a big fan of those spiked ones though, if you get a dog who just wont quit then thats gonna really do some damage as opposed to a regular choke chain.

try a pinch collar and fit it to right behind the ears. can be found like petsmart. if you dont like it return it. but i can guarentee you that when you have one its almost 100% controll over the dog. just a quick jerk and she will listen to you. unless shes super hard headed (i have a dog i am training like that right now and ohh boy its fun :/

if you train your dog properly from the beginning using these horrible pinch collars wouldnt be needed. basic training from the day after you receive the puppy will prevent needing to jam metal spikes into its neck.

no poll, i prefer to read words.

my dogs neck is as big as her head, regular collars are easily escaped.
tried a martingale ? Either way IME most people against choke chains dont have big dogs. Usually its beagle owners saying its inhumane. Try walking a bernese mountain dog puppy without one. Although he has since gotten much better and has a regular collar :headbang2 for me its a temporary solution.

The way german shepherds are shown it conflicts with doing any heeling, they are taught to pull on the leash for the shows. We start training at 12ish months - 24 mo. we train for schutzhund titles which is alittle bit more than I think what you do...

depends on the dog.
My brother-in-law's dog is a big dummy. You could probably hit him with a bat and he'd look over like "did you say something?, duhhh"

my dog is far more sensitive. I only need a regular colar and leash. If she gets focused on a cat or something, i just need to yank on that a little bit and she's back to normal healing next to me.
A choke colar on her would be overkill.

I dont think they are cruel if you put them on right and just use them as a correction. And it depends on the dog whether they are even necessary.

I have had big dogs and a medium dog now and I hate them. I actually find I can control my dog better on a harness then with a collar. Also collars can be damaging to a dog that tends to pull in general when used with a leash. I found out first hand with my dog after I found out the reason she is hacking and sometimes seemed to have trouble breathing was because of an inflamed throat due to having the collar (regular one) choke her when she would tug on the leash. I only use her harness now with the leash, which with a hyper active dog a harness is much better to control your dog anyways, I noticed a huge difference in control with my dog using one. I have seen plenty of people train big dogs with out the use of a choke collar and even the large dogs we (my family) used to have, had been trained with out them. I think there are plenty of options to properly training a dog without the use of any type of choke collar. Thats imo.

I also hate those chain collars to because when you socialize your dog with other dogs you risk injury to both dogs. I say this why?

Dogs were playing (yes dogs that are bigger) and the one dog got his lower jaw caught in the other dogs choke collar, the owners ran to help them, unfortunetly by the time the owners got to the dog they were really tangled and they couldn't get them untangled. The choke collar was really tight around the one dogs neck.... cutting off oxygen to the dog. The owners were able to get bolt cutters from across the street but by the time they got the bolt cutters and got back to the dogs the one dog had suffocated to death from the choke collar. Its very sad. It happened in sanford out near where I used to live before I moved.

I've got 14 dogs, have had over a dozen dogs at the same time the past 20+ years and worked in animal clinics most all my working life. I'll forever believe if you take the time, are firm & consistant (no jerking) then *any dog can walk calmly on a loose lead with just their regular collar. I'll *never believe any different. Choke chains are for instant results. If you do it right from the start you won't ever need a choke chain, pinch collar or shock collar. I've proved it time and again with hundreds of dogs.

pinch collars for training choke collars for just whatever, but never use the choke just put it on the dead ring. using the choke collars damage your dogs 100000x more than pinch if your actually choking/strangling your dog due to lack of oxygen. pinch collars dont hurt your dogs, just get their attention.

Exactly...I use the pinchers occassionally when going for walks...Particularly in new areas where there are tons of attractive scents (i.e. nature reserves). Never the chokers. But I do feel either can be used. Once the dog is trained, the collars just serve as a reminder. Just putting them on can enhance the positive behavior of your loved one.

lol my auntie used to breed and show GSD's for a living and they never once used a pinch collar. yet they did fine for the 20 years ive known them do it. if your having to resort to pich collars then you need to re-evaluate your training programme.
