Hey there! I'm totally new to the topic, and I'm going to make my first monster fish aquarium. Because of smaller space, I'm planning a 30-40 gallon aquarium. Are there any monsters I could keep in it? My requirements are simple:
-Active
-Agressive/Voracious eater
-Durable
Exodons caught my eye, since they are like little piranhas, but are there any other good choices? Maybe some sort of agressive Cichlid? Or something similar to pike? I won't have problem with getting food for small piscivores, my guppy tank is slowly getting overcrowded.

There's a lot!
Golden wonder killifish, will eat crickets
Various puffers (namely schoutedeni, dragon puffer, or green spot and figure 8 but they are brackish)
Dwarf pike cichlids (will eat shrimp, minnows/guppies, and worms)
Tiger barbs (kind of like exodon)
If you want to go into amphibians, you could get an axolotl (they'll eat mostly night crawlers, but will eat small fish)
Burmese Clouded Archer Fish (these are the smaller freshwater 6 inch variety)
The last one I'm going to suggest to you is the leopard bush fish

Ive had good success with some of the lurker puffer. They sit when no one is around but totally respond and interact when Im around. I have a solo hairy puffer and solo arrowhead in their own 65B. I know others have had total pet rock lurkers but mine are pretty awesome and active.

Oh wow, i saw the pike cichlids. These are really cool! Is there any other fish that hunts like that? Im trying to know all the options before i decide.
When it comes to puffers, im not really sure about them. I dont really like their looks.

I wasn’t always a puffer fan. I started watching puffer feeding videos and wow talk about brutal, voracious feeders! Still amazing to watch mine tear a shore crab in half and chow down. Plus they are very personable and interact as much as any cichlid. A great ‘wet pet’ in my opinion.

Well, while I was checking out the cichlids, i found out that the pike cichlids are almost unavailable where i live. Is there any other kind of predatory cichlid i could get? I heard of acaras, but i don't think there is any predatory acara small enough for this kind of aquarium. Although red jewel cichlids look really pretty, and I think i saw them many times in my LFS. What do you think about them?
