Cichla intermedia

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
So according to Oliver are market will be flooded with intermedia next year when Asia is tired of them. Again I just don't know if I believe that. How many og cichla keepers feel that this will happen?

He is on the vendor list for the Canada marketplace as that is his locàtion...I get your rant as far as the so called secrecy regarding the availibity of this fish...I'm just wondering why he said he never ships to the U.S....as far as Asia it might be a case where demand is very high for them there and the sellers are getting far more what they want than they could get for them here....and that's minus the risk and hassle of shipping.
This whole thing is interesting and I hope you and others eventually do get your hands on some but I'm quite content with kelberi cichla, mainly Bahia.

Don't get me wrong I love my 4 Orinos. Orino are my favorite ever since I saw my first one from hulon I was hooked!!! But my next favorite is an intermedia!! As far as why he said he doesn't ship to the usa I'm not sure about but I have the conversation I had with him. I just wish we would actually start seeing them here with out all this run around excuses of why they aren't here already lol!!

I understand where you are coming from I was just saying that I'm not really into all of the rare types...I wouldn't mind a fogo though lol.Remember it wasn't too long ago that people were longing for xingu and then about a year ago they were everywhere. They seemed to have dried up now but that's how it goes I guess....just be patient and pile up your money.

They're hardly excuses, importers and exporters alike wouldn't mind providing the community with its demands. And if you would look at the recent past of Cichla you would see that time and time again it's happened, previously uncommon/rare Cichla being introduced to the community and taking root. In the hobby species like Cichla Kelberi, Piquiti, Melaniae use to be a lot more uncommon. However, thanks to the community for providing a demand and importers/exporters for providing the supply those species have made it into your aquariums.

Now some of these Cichla are more difficult than others to export because of many very real factors. In example, some species are simply more rare than others, and this can be seen in the Kullander & Ferreira 2006 ichthyological survey. To put it into perspective 73 Cichla Temensis specimens were documented in their survey compared to only 6 Cichla Intermedia. But there is more to it than just scarcity, some of these Cichla are harder to get to for the fisherman, some of them are located in areas that are regulated/preserved making it sometimes unlawful to commercially export. And those are just two issues importers/exporters face, there are many more. As you can see there are a lot of logistics when it comes to down the importation/exportation of Cichla. It's not easy.

Eventually though it is a very real real possibility that you will be able to have your very own. And to answer your question about a pair of Cichla Intermedia, I recall a guy in Germany having one, I might be wrong.

Would that be Michael Bottner?

I believe it. Very few US hobbiest will pay the price for first hand rare fish. I hear there is a hand full in the states but we'll see if they get exported.

Its no secret, Xingu should arrive soon. Check out Michael Böttner YT page.

Ken you were right, Intermedia right now worth much more then I thought.

Ok so who has these hand fulls supposedly in the states?? All I keep seeing is talk but no proof by anyone. Of course they are in Asia that's where they all go. I get they are a protective species as well which makes it more risky. What I'm getting at if Oliver says he's been shipping for years since 2005? Why haven't we seen them in the Asian market yet?? If they are so flooded there with them like he says and like we see with other cichla species where are the pics?? I haven't seen an Asian markets selling intermedias in years! I think the one I saw was called river wonders or river something. So again if there are this many in captive where are the pictures?? You would think uou would have seen some pictures by now.
