Cichlasoma ornatum???

Hey MM, where did Mel get his ornatums from? He's had them a while as I remember.
Back on topic, I really want the fish in question to be ornatum. I really do. Hope we can get a better picture or some other clarification. I don't think anyone intends any ill will by this thread; it's just that a rare fish like that begs more details!

Oliver Lucanus from Below water (in Canada) had some... at like $100 for little ones
I know that a couple groups of folks worked through the logistics of importing them from Canada...

Ummm ... if it is from the Rio San Juan, then I doubt they are ornatum. Ornatum are a west coast species, only previously found in the Patia River in Colombia in the extreme southwest of Colombia as well as mostly in Ecuador. That's on the other side of the continental divide from the Rio San Juan.
They might be a closely related undescribed realitive, but I don't think any species is successful enough to cross the Andes, even if they hired a shirpa.

PS - They closely related exCichlasoma atromaculatum is from the Rio San Juan, which looks like a more sharp nosed ornatum in shape, minus the spangles but with blotches instead. Less colorful, but very cool.

Why don't we all just wait and see instead of jumping to conclusions or speculations that none of us are qualified to answer. We did not go and collect them so how can we say for sure what they are or are not. And who are any of us that any person on here has to answer to,call or pm him like he said and get your answers.anyway they are some beautiful fish even stressed out in the net. I personally would just wait to see them in a tank and settled in,a thread full of opinions(including mine)is not going to solve much until we see the actual fish in a tank(just my 2 cents)have a great day everyone

Interesting. I don't see the same thing in pantos all the time. Several pics over on Juan Miguel's site that show them without spots or the scaleless patch (though the latter is tough to see I'm sure).
