This is why I was steering away from the breeding project. With classroom pets its always already tricky enough when they die. The students get so attached to the pets! But it is a good way for them to learn the cycle of life.
 
convicts are a good indistructable choice, but africans are also very hardy, more active, more colorful, can be kept in high concentration, and have many unique qualities.
I do prefer to keep them in a minimum of 55g, but many will do just fine in a 29g. Brichardi will do fine in a 29g and they do a great job raising young.
I also often consider keeping a colony of demasoni in a 29g.

Love it Gr8! Any small cichlid would be my opinion. Gouramis? Convicts are good, just get them small so they can watch them grow too! My kids loved my convicts, and the influx of babies they had.
