Perhaps you could ask a question in the teachers lounge on how to student proof your tank? locks? etc.

I love the idea....But the downside is then gr8 would have to teach sex-ed. What happens if the male kills the female?

Then a student says, "Oh my daddy hits my mommy like that too" and then you've got to talk to the authorities.

I'd go with cons- the fry get fed to Squirtle.

Steering away from breeding, I'd go with an African Butterfly Fish- something uncommon that the kids might not otherwise come across.
