My oldest son is in first grade, and he helps me take care of the 7 fish tanks we have. He tells the people at the lfs they're wrong sometimes, and the worst part is, he's right.:headbang2 Give them a lil more credit, it's only the things they're interested in they pic up quickly. The number 47 isn't interesting to a first grader. Now some tadpoles, or something you net out of the local pond/lake, that might interest them to know what's in there. U don't have to take them with you, just take pics of you doing it, so they can relate. :D

 Sounds like a future monster fish keeper.

How do you know I didnt make the number 47 interesting? How do you know that I didnt do several art projects making that number? Counting 47 pieces of candy? Wrote a story about the number? Made games using that number? Etc. :D

As a first grade teacher you have to make EVERYTHING interesting, remember my audience has the attention span of, well a five year old...lol :D If it wasnt interesting my class would be mass chaos! Kinda like the lounge here...lol

I've been teaching my 3 y/o nephew the names of the various fish in my home. Not only did he say plecostomus immediately after I pointed it out and said plecostomus but he remembers, all I have to do it point at the fish and say "whats that?" and he gets it every time. He dosen't pronounce it exactly right buy hey, he's three. Still says it better than most adults I know. Anyway, a living breathing animal moving around in front of them is always more interesting than a number. I think a first grader could easily commprehend the difference between a fish from their own backyard and another from around the world. Its your tank though so its up to you and what you feel is best for the children, I think its awsome your putting up a tank for them anyway, regardless of what it is stocked with.

Your Nephew sounds lucky to have such a cool uncle! All good points Sand, however I do have 20 students versus a one on one situation. Also with the increasing pressure to teach standards unfortunatly science and social studies will always take a back seat to math, reading, and writing. Sad but thats the reality of teaching today.

Like you said, Im just happy to have a tank in the class. Thou on a happier native friendly note we will be catching some tadpoles later on in the year, then we will let them go in our school pond! :)

Thanks D
