Because collecting pieces of natural history is cool. Just because a bone's function makes you feel uncomfortable (I have no idea why) doesn't mean it should be ignored, LOL!

Baculum are interesting (albeit weird).

This is a very cool thread, I would wonder in part of the slowness of the progress of the beetles is due to how much meat appears to have been left on the bones (based on the midway progress photos). Did you let the meat dry out adequately ahead of time? I've found my beetles are hesitant to colonize meat that isn't properly dry. It seems like there is a lot of soppy wet looking mess in the midway through photos. Is that a blood pool in the photos or was that something else? Just curious.

Can't wait to see photos of the degreasing progress. I'm currently degreasing a female black bear skull and it is taking forever.

The hog skull is completely done now and ready for the degreasing process. I am going to be doing that later today. I think I will be using kerosene for this so it will probably take a week or two. Once that is complete, we will be bleaching it with 40% concentrated hydrogen peroxide and ground up chalk.

The beetles are already working on a section of a boa now.

Too bad we can't just fast-forward to the end of the week. :(

thats amazing how they have done that on the boa.
i think when my burms done, i will probably do something like this with him. id love to keep him. somehow frame it.
x

yep- they're done that pigeon long and ago but unfortunately i had to go tend to an emergency at a friend's and didn't make it back quickly enough... lots of toe bones need to be put back right, but they did a great job in getting it all cleaned out. I'm doing duck heads now and baby sitting a friend's colony to help her get its health back up (its a mystery why hers isn't doing well) while she uses mine
