Cleaning a hog skull (graphic)

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
NICE!

Didn't want to troll it up by saying what more than likely has been said in the many previous posts...but couldn't resist.

This is definitely one of the better threads I've been witness to here on good old MFK.

Good stuff.

Thanks everyone.

Whew! My dad shoots groundhogs and boils their skulls, then mounts them on pieces of slate in his kitchen... Bit of an obsession of his, but he's got nothing on you SnakeGuy... cool thread though, almost made my wife throw up!:headbang2

haha, this is mostly Swampy's work. He is the one with that deals with the beetles. Boiling the bones really weakens them so if you want them to last, the best thing to do is either masserate them in room temp water then brush off the rest (very nasty process) or get something to clean it for you (i.e. beetles or ants).

So snakeguy101, what's left to do on this skull and how much longer do you feel it will be before you're skull will be finished? So far, it's really been an interesting project. I'm anxious to see what you'll do with it after the cleaning has been completed. Thanks for sharing!

Hog skulls are really fatty, so to keep it from yellowing it'll be soaked in a degreaser for a couple of weeks then whitened with peroxide (Not the weak stuff from the grocery store, the kind that they used to bleach hair)

Here is a link to parts 1 and 2 of the dirty jobs episode that gives an awesome overview of the process.

I am truly at awe with Parts 1 & 2 of the vodeo's. It's amazing at how long it takes for their process to be completed. Thanks for sharing, Swampy. I see how you might enjoy working there. I think I would enjoy it also, once you get past the smell! :D

EDIT: I'd advise everyone to watch the video's who may be interested on a quick tutorial process. If you have a weak stomach, I'd go watch something else.
My brother's in Phillips, WI should watch these videos. I wish they could see this processed work. They'd be awed, too.
