Cleaning a hog skull (graphic)

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Yep. Trying to get my friend's colony to colonize some duck heads, but her beetles are not moving well. I've checked them for mites and they're clean, I'm running them in my bathroom at around 80 F (usually kicking them up in temperature helps fix most issues), their moisture levels are appropriate, but they're just not colonizing anything I have tried to put in there for them (including dry cat food which is usually a resounding success).

How are your friend's colony progressing? Have you had any luck with them, where they're moving more normally, again? What did you do to correct their behavior and make them more active? Keep us posted please on further progress. We're curious to know. Thanks.

okay, the skull is almost done degreasing. we bought the bleach for it today and will be soaking it (along with some more snake vertebrae) in the bleach in the next few days. Pics to follow.

This is crazy.

Yes it is crazy, but the good type of crazy. Hence, it leads to phenominal insanity. That's why we're all on this thread. Glad you could join us. :D:D:D

My friend's colony never fixed itself. Apparently they stopped pupating successfully, someone suggested it's an overwintering response but I don't think that's true since beetles have a very short life span in general (less than 6 months). The colony is still running and they're eating very slowly, but it's obviously declining.

I started a separate tank for her with beetles from my colony. All of those are going good.

I'm sad to say though that we haven't resolved the mystery of why her colony went to hell. It's really bothering me.:(

This is awesome!

I would love to do something like this but I just don't have the resources. Cleaned animal bones and skulls make wonderful artistic still lifes/ displays.

Here it is nearly completed. They are working on another snake now.
