Cloudiness and general despair

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
your water tests showing good, not cloudy any more? for the ick, if this is whats going on? yes heat. again i would love a pic or vid of the spots.

I should have added you do need to do a water change, fin level, or 90%, vacuum well, you want that MG out of the tank if still present. and gravel clean.

Thanks SK for bringing this to my mind, besides raising the heat is the most important thing to do.

Hello; OK again. So you did add salt and the malacite/ formalhadhyde? May I suggest some water changes to dilute the salt and other and to try the 90 degree heat treatment.

Also if you do not already have them, add some bubblers. They help keep enough oxygen in the water. Warm water holds less O2.

Good luck

Originally I added salt and heat, which seemed to kill the ich. Then when I changed some fish around afterwards, I discovered some spots on my GT, and decided to take the direct medicine route.

Halfway through the medicine option, I really hate using chemicals like formaldehyde etc; feels like the lesser of two evils, formaldehyde being bad for the fish, and 31° temp also being bad.

2nd half of treatment is due Monday, then I'd be doing a large water change on Wednesday.

Unless it's safer to raise temp to 30° and just do a large change just now to dilute chemicals.

Hello; In the end we each get to run our tanks any way we wish. I would not do another dose of the pictured medicine nor add any more salt, but do what you are comfortable with.

Treating ick can take a while as the eggs can hatch out after the spots are gone from the fish. The temp treatment should go on fora time after there are no more spots on the fish. As Pop's asked, do you have any pictures of the infected fish?

Pop's brought to mind another thing. To help get rid of the eggs and larvae use a gravel cleaner siphon when doing water changes. This physically removes some of the eggs and larvae.

Thanks again everyone for the replies, after reading the responses; I'm inclined to do a large water change, I.e. 70%, and set my heaters to 31°, and run with it for a good while; any concerns before I proceed with this?

again with out pics we can not be certain ICK is your issue for the white spot you speak of. other than that i have none.

Con.... Your number one issue is trying to change stock while already experiencing issues with disease. I feel like it was just last week that you reported you had ick in your Oscar tank, and now you have moved these fish out and brought new fish in with a load of medicine and treatments in between/before/during/after... Next time you have 'party induced ick' try treating the tank to a state of stable health before switching stock, and worrying less about starting a thread about nitrate levels in Oscar tanks (as a long term... Monitorting thread) in the mean time. Any tank with this amount of flux is bound to crash, hard.

Chill out, nothing is going to change within hours. You were probably well on your way to fixing an issue when you decided to dump meds and switch stock.

Ouch that hurt. Correct, no less; if only I were perfect :P
