Cloudy water, new set up. Is this normal??

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
There's a guy on Long Island craigs list selling live rock and the contents of his 90 gallon for$100.00. You should really check it out.

Too late :irked: :irked: .........Quick question, I live near the beach and someone suggested that I get some sea water and get sand from the shore( I guess the wet sand by the water) to help seed my tank. Is this true or do they not know what there talking about??

Right... :p

It is probably dust from the sand. Ass a chumk of filter floss (pillow stuffing at a sewing store or Home Depot is cheap) to your filter & change ouot when it's clogged. that couild clear it up. Add your live rock now too.

As far as those lights, unless you are planning on adding corals, you're spending too much $$$ on lighting. You can get PC lighting for $150 or less (shipped), on Ebay. Unless you're getting the 4 bulb set. Then, it's not a bad price.

I just changed substrate, and the skimmer removed the cloudiness in less than three hours. I have the Coralife Super Skimmer 65. If you had a skimmer, I think your problem would be gone.

The quality of coastal seawater is debatable...especially if you live in NYC. I wouldn't do it.

The sand from a beach around an urban area is probably also of sketchy quality, so though it MIGHT harbor some beneficial bacteria the risks far outweigh the possible benefits.

"Live" rock is no longer live once it's dried out, that stuff in the pic is just plain lace rock. You can, however, use it for base rock and put real live rock on top of it to seed it, which is what a lot of people do. This often comes out cheaper than using all live rock.

I wouldn't chance all the "nasties" from beach sand. God knows what might be lurking in there! Ask your LFS for a cup of sand to seed yours.

Offer him $20-25 & ask him to throw in the sand. Tell him you're a newbie.

What's a "sea serpent"? Starfish?

He wants 40 which is no problem for me but hE asked me if I have the proper lighting for the the live rock, He says it has polyps and mushrooms on it. I have a standard flourescent strip light. a double bulb and a single bulb
