Oscars, Jags, yes. Discus, Angels, food.

You think he would really eat the angels?? I would be getting the about the same time if I did...so the angels wont be too little.

A Clown Knife has a far greater growth rate then the angel. Althoigh they may not be able to be swallowed at a large size, they still can be easily killed and pushed around. And yes a Jag will do good in a 180G.

Angels will not do well with a Clown Knife. There are basically two end results: Eaten, or attempted to be eaten. Either ends in death. Angels are a non-aggressive community fish, CK's are an aggressive community fish. They do OK with fish similar to their size and temperament, but smaller fish will perish. I learned this lesson the hard way with my Largemouth Bass. I had a nice native collection with Darters, Perch, Sunfish, minnows, and the centerpiece, my 2" LMB. It's growth rate far exceeded that of it's peers, and so did it's appetite. After 3 months, the only fish left was the LMB, and it was twice it's original size.

Eeek! Well, I don't want a tank full of food thats for sure!! I was thinking, if I am going to end up with a big tank anyway...would Bala sharks, Pacu or tin foil barbs be good???

So, are you saying a Jag WOULD be ok?? Cause don't tease me on this I love them!!

jags are pretty agressive...i'm not sure about that, but i dont know as much as ewurm, so dont take my word for it. tin foil barbs and balas would probably be ok.

Pacu-
Again multiple hundreds of gallons to house one-But would work as tank ates-

My clown knife grew to the 20 inch mark in under a year-So be prepared----You will not have mutiple years to obtain a proper tank for one....
each fish in different-
But some tank mates I have had with mine would be-
Bichirs,severums,aro's,Gourami's,Pike's,tire track eel,BGK,JD,Fire mouths,Convicts,etc,etc....

Well, depending on prices, sales, great finds ect....I will be getting AT LEAST a 180, if something bigger comes up at a great price, I'll get it, a in a couple months. I was under the impression he would be fine in that for a couple years??

you COULD keep a ck in a 180 for a couple years but its not ideal, just dont overstock.

OK, well in that case I will be looking for only 1 or 2 tank mates. Hopefully it wont take me that long to get a bigger tank then that. Like I said though you never know I may come across on on Craigslist, newspaper, ebay, aqua-bid, here, AC that is bigger and a comparable price;)

What IYO, would be suitable for tankmate(s)?

I would put him alone in the 55gal and teach him to eat all the different variety of foods while he is in there.. all types of food, sinking and floating type as well so when he someday goes into the big boy tank and there are tankmates he will know to eat everything .. be it food that sinks and food that floats and he will join the others instead of hiding.. mine was raised in a 55gal then 75gal and now 125gal and up.. you can teach him to eat of your fingers.. etc as they get to know you and bond with you.. and don't forget to find out what he was eating in the LFS ..if they were feeding him live food or if he is now on pellets.. and if it is live food write again for tips to get him onto pellets and frozen foods.. here is my boy.. they are absolutely wonderful fish..and mine never hides when he sees me around.. :D Mine is with 4 large severums and a big pleco..all is perfect among them.
