clown loach feeding

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I feed mine brine shrimp pellets, spirolina pellets, nls, blood worms, and algae wafers, I am not sure what they like best, but they definitely like feeding time.

RD - I would like to know what types of NLS do you feed your loaches? Your loaches' color looks superb.

Eva - those CL's were raised from a very small size on the 1mm Cichlid formula, and years later moved up to the 2mm medium Fish formula. Today they are fed the 3mm Large Fish formula, and now reside in a friends tank.

Well fed clowns look like this unless they are doing their dominant thing...they then grey out.

If by well fed you mean on a premium high quality food such as NLS, then yes, I agree.
But simply filling a CL up with various food will most certainly not result in them looking like the ones in my photo. In fact, when the diet of those CL's was altered by my friend when attempting to get his Asian aro on large floating corni-sticks, their color and overall condition took a serious hit. They became fat, less active, and their color became far less vibrant. I wasn't the only person to notice this, and comment on it. A few months later my friend got them back on an exclusive diet of NLS. Problem solved. :)

Ive experienced this as well. I had clown loaches I raised on hikari cichlid gold before and they looked decent but not bright. I now have smaller guys raised on NLS and the orange is brighter and the black is bolder. I dont have pics to show you, but I noticed a difference at least

We have been down this road before RD. What's a quality food? Wardly shrimp pellets! Actually, I feed blood worms, mystis shrimp, earth worms(all freeze dried), zuchinni, they also get NLS pellets and some massivores(but rarely). They also munch on algae wafers meant for my plecos and even meal worms I toss in for some cichlids...

Color wise, a few looks orange/red like yours, a few looks more yellow and black but still nice bright contrast, then there are a couple that always seemed to be jostling for the top dog position and always on various shade of graying out...but am I correct reading from your other article that those who are more yellow and black will stay that way due to genetics no matter what food you give them?
