Clown Loach's.....Should I just give up?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Brett, it seems that everytime i put a loach in my 180, i see the loach flapping his gill covered in ick a couple days later, and its a PITA and very stressful for the fish to be netted out and be put in a Q tank.

I have never put any of my loaches in a Q tank...but I also kind of have my own style of fish keeping that I don't recommend to anyone. I always just throw my new loaches in my 180, no matter what size they might be.

I don't use a QT tank either for loaches, but I select stock carefully.

I would raise the temp to 82. I rarely have ick problems.

The only time that I have ich problems is when I am moving them from different tanks. It usually clears up within the day, with a slightly higher temp and some aquarium salt.

Current stock:
17" Clown Knife
8" Albino Clown Knife
2X 6" Ornate Bichirs
12" Rope Eel
?" Peacock Eel- I think....
6" Salvini Cichild
6" Blue Peacock
4" Red Jewel
5" Clown loach

I always had trouble with loaches in the past as well. I started raising my temps to 80-82 and have had more success. The tip about selecting is good too. It seems like all the LFS have skinny sickly loaches.

I also feed the hikari wafers which they seem to love-lots of clicking!

I also feed Hikari Carnivore. I supplement that with algae wafers, zuchinni, mussels, smelt eggs, bloodworms, mysis, krill, brine shrimp, and Omega One flake.
