Clown Loach's.....Should I just give up?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I get them all fat and healthy, but within a week they always seem to get ick really bad. Just mollested in it. Ive had my 5" loach in my tank with all of the others for 6 months now. The knifes are not agressive to the loachs nor is anything else in the tank, never fins nipped or missing.

Guess ill try again

oh if they are getting ick.. that is a whole different remedy.. as soon as you see they have ick you must take them out and add salt and heat to the tank..when you get these new ones i would definitly put them in quarenteen for a few weeks so that if you see ick you can take care of it before they are in your big tank..so you won't stress them anymore by having to move them and then if they have to be treated you can do it right away.. thats great your clown knives are so good..i hope mine is too when he goes in to the big tank..

I am sorry but if you did not treat the big tank {because there are others in there sometimes the ick is still there,it depends on how soon you put new loaches in there. this time i would definitly quarenteen them.. keep a close eye on them.. if you see ick up the temp but not all at once over a period of hours up to almost 90 degrees.. slowly make it higher and add the salt .. no more then a tablespoon per 10 gal..can be a little less.. the sooner you see the ick and the faster you treat it the best chance you will get rid of it for good.. they do build up an amunity {sp} over time.. but this is what i would do with the new guys your getting .. give it a couple of weeks at least ..if you see anything on the new guys nip it in the bud.

DON'T PUT ANY MORE IN!!!

Wait a few weeks (3 or more) with the water temp at 82-85 and do water changes as often as you can (no less than every 7 days). Don't for get the epsom salt either. You can find it at local stores for less than 3 dollars. Add it every time you do a water change and every day in between. This process will kill the ich in your tank. Hopefully you will do this for 5 weeks or more. It's labor intensive, but worth it if you really want them to live.

Once you think you have it ready, buy some small ones and add them to the tank to check for ich (keep the temp high!). If they do fine then you know it worked. If it doesn't work, start over and try again.

Make sure you raise the temp over time. I raised it one degree every 3 days. It may already be high because of the weather though. If so, make sure the heater is adjusted so that the temp doesn't drop. It worked for me, I hope you have the same success.

right now the 30 is empty, temp is in the 80's and am doing alot of water changes on it, so hopefully i can get some loachs in it soon and try once again

i have never heard of using epsom salt... the only salt i use is aquarium salt.. Have you used epsom salt on your fish? I know it is used for humans.. ? Let me know.

At the risk of sounding callous, I would suggest you give up on clown loaches at least until you try something new. They arent an easy fish to keep and some of your fish keeping habbits obviously arent working with them. Ick or white spot is not only brought on by temperature changes but also by stress and/or poor water conditions.

Putting them into a different tank to see if you can keep them alive by themselves is a good suggestion however.
