College Fish

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
My daughter had a ten gallon tank during her first year in college. She had a coliseum, that she bought at PetSmart, as a decoration. She had one large betta (named Gladiator) and two Clown Loaches. Gladiator was a hit with all the girls in the dorm.

I bought a cart to move the tank from dorm to home and back during the holiday & spring breaks.

What kind of cart is this? I was starting to worry about how I'd get this tank between school and home without traumatizing the fish. Those gudgeons look cool.

I bought the cart at the garden center in Home Depot. It is like a wagon with inflatable wheels. I also picked up a couple 5G buckets w/ lids to transport the fish.

The routine now after three years (she has a 16G bow front now). Siphon ~4G of water into one bucket. Put the coliseum in the bucket. Fill the second bucket w/ 4G water. Put the fish and filter media in the bucket and snap on the lid. Put the tank & two buckets on the cart and wheel them out to the car.

Thanks, that will really come in handy when breaks roll around. I'm going to head over to my LFS when Thanksgiving break come and see what kind of prices they have, and hopefuly I'll be able o pick up a tank and filter systems, and heater. I might try to get away with a 12 or 15 gallon. Hopefully they'll have the fish I want and they'll be able to survive the 2 hour drive back to the university.

I'm not allowed to have pets where I live, not even fish. But regardless, I have a 10g stocked with a Blue Ram, 4 Cardinals (was originally 7 but 3 have since died) and 1 Oto (was originally 2, but one died...I think he got fried by the heater). Blue Rams are very cool, but they need crystal clear water. At LEAST a weekly water change and a diet of frozen as well as flake foods.

Sounds like you have some nice stock. Sorry about all of the deaths. I like otos too, I'll probably put a few in the tank. Does anyone know what the max size of a Bull Pleco is?

Okay, I have a basic idea of what I want in my tank;

2 Blue Rams
Bulldog Pleco
3 Zebra Oto
2 Pygmy Gourami
African Butterfly fish

I would probably plant it and put in a group of dwarf puffers. Like maybe 3-4 and then a pair of otos and a pair of corydoras. Youd have some micro mini predators. I picked up a couple of dwarfs from petsmart tonight theyre about 1/4" long and growing out in a 2.5G tank:naughty:
