Updates soon. The fry in the 20g getting 5 small feedings daily and 75% water changes daily are very noticeablly larger than the 55 tank fry getting whatever scraps their dad doesn't get. I kinda figured that.

6 feedings and 2x 75% water changes a day'll do that. ^^ I kept some with the male in a seperate tank, where I just did normal maintenence, and just fed the male without worrying about the fry, and the fry with him are MUCH smaller. It's pretty cool to see the difference.

.1. If there's a male con, and a female con together, it's a 90% sure thing you'll have a pair. They will swim together constantly, clean potential spawn sites together, and often times they'll display to each other... flaring gills, "slapping" each other with tails, and later on, lip lock.
2. There's really no such thing as "pregnant" in egg-laying species, however you can tell she is carrying eggs by a rounding of the stomache. Basically, she turns into a fatty, and sometimes in Convicts the orange on the female's stomache will get much brighter, often turning into a "highway cone" orange.
3. Once eggs are present, and there is a definate pair, it should be within a week that eggs are deposited into the spawn site.
4. I wasn't aware mine hatched (I didn't even know there were any!) until I saw free swimming fry. However, usually within 24-72 hours, the eggs will hatch, and 2-3 days afterwards, the fry will be free swimming and ready to be fed.
Enjoyed reading your thread. I rescued 24 Cons late last year, had them spawn about 10 times before I traded them in, and I'm now growing out 10 of the babies to start breeding them. Like yourself, I'm just going to have one pair and trade the others in. Since I currently have one male at nearly 2" and 9 smaller females, it probably won't be long before I get a pairing! Let you know how it goes, and keep up the journal.

Well since the pair has been split up, I've moved onto German Blue Rams for my next learning step. Working with Wild Caught Blue Rams are more of a challenge, but I'm still currently raising this batch of fry from the Convict pair. Very slow growers these ones. The Blue Rams have their own thread, though.
