Con Solo the Convict

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Setting in little by little. Still a little on edge but he's greeting me at the front of the glass and still begging for food. I think he's also starting to realize he's the little chubby boss in his tank lol. Still going after that back wall every once in a while but less often.

I noticed something today that I thought was really cool. So normally when I would do water changes Con Solo would just stay in his cave until I was finished, then he would come right out. The swordtails are the complete opposite, they’re all over my hands when I’m doing maintenance. Today though Con Solo was confident enough to stay out while I was filling the tank back up. Got a pic of of the curious little guy peeking behind the plant.

He has literally never came out to see what was going on when I was filling up the tank. My guess is the swordtails are doing their job perfectly at being dither fish.

Sounds like it.
Everything looks great!

I’m considering removing the small male swordtail from the tank. The dominant male is really giving him hell, feel bad for the little guy. I don’t see any damage but he’s definitely hesitant to stay out, hiding in the floating vines and has been excluded from the rest of the group.

I have never had any luck keeping multiple male Swordtails in a single tank. One has always been ultra dominant and either kill his competition or force me to move it to another tank. So now I don't even bother to try and keep 2 male Swordtails together.
Tho atm I do have a male Molly and Platty in the same tank. Maybe it's the color difference is leading them to getting along, not sure.

Thanks for the info Jexnell. Gonna take him out as soon I get back home from class.

The most I have had is three males in a 6ft 125gal. Even with all that room it still turned into a Highlander show where only one can survive. Maybe would be better with more males like 6 or so. But then you would need like 18 females or so to have enough to go around.

Put the male sword in a spare 10 gallon tub I had with a sponge filter (I really should look for a cheap 10g for situations like this, I only have spare 29s) but I think the tub will suffice. He’s only going to be in there until I figure out when and where I can bring him this week.
