Con Solo the Convict

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
These two are up to something, I just have no idea what it is 😆. This particular bunch of fake leaves has become a place of interest for Leia.View attachment 1529231View attachment 1529232
She’s taking mouthfuls of something from here, all the way into this corner crevice of the log. Sand, eggs, wigglers? I have no freaking clue lol. I genuinely can’t see anything in the bunch of leaves, and can’t get a good angle to see what’s in that corner of the log. View attachment 1529241Solo is vehement in making sure the swordtails get nowhere near her. Displaying full black bars. I might not know what they’re doing, what I do know though is that I can watch these two for literal hours.View attachment 1529240
Both Looking stunning. Con Solo now looks completely different. Fully dressed up as the convict he is. I’m glad things are looking towards success as even with convicts that’s not always the case introducing two adult cichlids. Good on you for being patient and not rushing the process. 💪😁👍

Thank you 🙏. Probably the most rewarding part of this hobby is seeing things come together as you hoped they would. I’m hoping that breeding these two gives me at least some experience that can be applied to other species in the future. I’ve taken a peek at some of your and other members’ HRP breeding projects. Those look fantastic. For now though, just trying to learn as much from these guys as I could.

WE HAVE FRY!!!! You cannot see them at all on camera, but I assure there are little wigglers where I circled in red.IMG_3049.jpegRight in that same pit I pointed out a few days ago. My assumption is that Leia did indeed have eggs inside the corner crevice of the log for the past 2 days. There was no way for me to see in that corner. She must’ve moved them to her pit today while I was at work, either after or while they were hatching. EXCITING STUFF! 😊

Congrats!! :D

And now the sad news, the only way to stop them now is to separate them, or every six weeks or so from now on be ready for the next batch.
And you can not feed them until they eat the eggs/fry but that could potentially screw up their bond but it’s what I do personally if I don’t plan on raising them. It’s been ok in my experience. They can work it out but there is the risk of them retaliating against each other so gotta keep a close enough eye on them. The longer they are bonded without issue even with making them eat egg/fry the less there is a risk though so that’s good.

Figured I’d kind of cross that bridge when I get to it lol. If I get overwhelmed with fry I guess I can always remove Leia, and put it on hold. Really want see them spawn at least a few times, it’s extremely exciting. Haven’t had cichlid fry in the house since my father was big into breeding mbuna years ago.
Right now my main concern is finding a way to get them from the 75 into the 29. That’s if I don’t just leave them in there. Figured I can siphon them out when they’re just about free swimming? Doing that is a bit intimidating though.
