Constipated Bichir?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Btw if you decide to get him another bichir buddy make certain you get one roughly the same size as him otherwise if it's too small it's food, or if it's too big, it might see him as food/competition.
Also don't be surprised if they lip lock with each other a few time right away, it's just their way of figuring out who is going to be boss.

Ty for the advice. He ended up passing a very sharp piece of gravel. However, he still doesn’t have much of an appetite. We took all the gravel out of the tank. I’m hoping it was just the one piece of gravel and that he didn’t swallow more.

It is possible that he swallowed multiple pieces but more then likely he just isn't feeling all too well atm. I would skip feeding for a few days to a week while he rests and recovers and if he still refuses to eat that's when I would get him a Epsom salt bath to help with passing any extra pieces he may have ingested.
Now if it comes down to a Epsom salt bath just make certain it's 100% Epsom salt with no sent additives. You can also find directions on how much to dose for a bath on YouTube with step by step procedures.

I didn’t feed him for a couple days. Tried some peas, but he wasn’t interested. After he passed the gravel I put a little food in there today, but he’s not really interested. If needed, I will try the epsom salt bath and will look up a how to on YouTube. You give really great advice on all things bichir related. ??

Lol honestly it's all general advice that you can use for most any fish. It also doesn't surprise me that he wasn't interested in eating peas, strict carnivores like bichirs aren't going to be too interested in plant matter. But to be fair you probably wouldn't feel like eating either if you just popped out a fist sized rock with hard sharp edges. Lol only ever had the 1 bichir that I grew out, got him a 2in and grew him out to 10in before I had to sadly take him to my lfs. Had the tank he was in spring a leak and had no where else that I could trust him to either not eat everything or not get beaten up by other fish. I had a ornate bichir and his favorite thing to eat was shrimp pellets and the occasional dead fish. He never seemed interest in living fish unless it was bite sized. This is a pic of him when I first got him. Lol kind of hard to see him with how well camouflaged he is.
