Hey, I tried all of your suggestions and I think I broke down my dad pretty good. My mom is still a different story. :hitting: Anywho, my dad said that "IF" we get a tank, it will have to go somewhere in the living room. "Why can't I put it in my room so it's out of everyone's way?" I asked. This is his answer: "One, the noise of the air bubbles will keep you awake at night. Second, the tank emits fumes that are not good for my health." :irked:

Okay, so in opposition to my father's first statement, I replied "If I plant the tank correctly there will be no need for an air pump." To this he laughed :screwy: I don't know why but I guess I got him. And for the second statement, I laughed. I said there is no way that this is true :grinno:. He then replies that I am wrong and until I bring proof that this is false, he won't let me put it in my room "IF" I get a tank.

So what I am asking of you is to please please provide me with some answers and/or some websites that are on this topic.

PS: I've seen pictures where people put their tanks right next to their head when they sleep so how bad can it be??? and incase you say why not put it in the living room... :D The living room is hit by direct sunlight in every corner at least six hours a day.

put it in the living room, suck up your fathers idiot remarks and just get the tank. then get the facts. so that you already have a tank.

First: It's none of his business if you can or cannot sleep. Once you get used to it, it's not a problem. Heck, why not get some ear plugs if he thinks this is an issue? You can tuck a cellphone with vibrating alarm under your pillow. I always do that.lol

Second: The only time tank emits fumes is if you do not clean your tank's substrate. Dead pockets in substrate if disturbed can release hydrogen sulfide which smells like rotten eggs and can cause acute respiratory problems to the fish and other aquatic creatures. I doubt you'll come to this point though.

Most of the time, the aquarium emits earthy smell due to organic materials in the tank but that is not harmful in any way. If he hates the smell, let him compare it to the smell of freshly mowned grass.

Tell him fishkeeping is relaxing. and show him plenty of tank pics that are found here.;)

fumes:ROFL: if anything i thinks the water is good for you. we just moved to a new house and placed all my tanks in the garage instead of the house, now both my wife and me are constantly thirsty and have chapped lips. its much to dry and quiet now.

1. I think you are more likely to be struck by lightning and win the lottery at the same time that have issues with "deadly fumes"

2. Even with live plants you will need a filter

3. Ive had tanks in my bed room for years you can get some very quiet cannisters.

4. In the end, they are your parents and you will have to live with and respect thier final desicion.

Haha, I have 2 tanks within 3 feet of my bed and a dual air pump running to both. It's somewhat noisy, but I fall asleep just fine, as long as I keep the tanks topped off so the hobs dont create that loud waterfall effect... Neither of them smell either, but I do religious weekly water changes. :headbang2

lol@fumes
wtf it highlighted like an email address?^^
anyway
air bubbles=airstone? you dont even need an airstone, and if the tank is filled up the filter is silet
