Wow, I love the information. And I agree, maybe I am not being respectful enough of my parents decisions. It is their house anyways and they do pay for the water and electricity bill. But still, waiting till I move out, I'm only in my sophomore year at high-school I still have to live through college. My fish desire meter will be off the charts by then! We'll see how it goes. I just hope to have a larger tank (55>) by the end of summer so I can enjoy it before I go off to college.

Again I totally appreciate these responses. MFK has been a wonderful experience for answering all of my questions (and making me hugely jealous when i see those 6000 gallon tanks etc... )

hey man,

I dig the respect for the parents thing...sometimes they need talking into it, sometimes they don't, sometimes they just don't buy it. You also need to think of the flooring and supports for a huge tank, accommodating and the maintenance of huge fish...the average living room OR bedroom for that matter probably is not well suited for the task...
One thing I can say is that you might want to keep things movable for your next few years, and accordingly smaller. You expressed interest in going off to college...sometimes education lasts for awhile and you move around a lot, so it might be wise to (as hard as it would be) to put your dream of a MONSTER tank on hold and keep it as the goal for the future.
I only say this because I had established large tanks before I moved for undergrad, and again for grad school, and you can well imagine that "just giving the fish away" really is not an option, so it becomes an issue in many cases.
Once you are settled and in a permanent home, you can get the largest possible aquarium that is feasible for your budget. And do this before you get married, because if she digs you with a monster tank, there will not be much else you will do that will piss her off.
Hope my advice helps.

If you read he does state it is him buying the tank so in all fairness the only reason they can/should be able to deny him getting it is if they have some kind of phobia of tanks or just dont like fish.... its his money why cant he do what he wants with it. thats how i have always lived and it has worked out fine.

josh

I am sorry i did not read that. i sort of agree. but then no i can not put any amount of tanks in my room even if i buy them. and if his parents dont allow them and you cant reason sorry to say it but... tough.

Agree 100% with this....if someone who is still with their folks has this problem and there is no budging on their part, then wait until you have your own place, no need to try to get around it with any deceit or anything like that. Just try to be "good" and inform them with good sources (magazine, books, etc.). Be respectful to them and at some point they might take your hobby seriously
Wow i have been called many things on this forum (someone went so far as to say i was the dumbest person he ever met:WHOA:) but its nice when somebody agrees with you and i agree with him.

First: It's none of his business if you can or cannot sleep. Once you get used to it, it's not a problem. Heck, why not get some ear plugs if he thinks this is an issue? You can tuck a cellphone with vibrating alarm under your pillow. I always do that.lol

Second: The only time tank emits fumes is if you do not clean your tank's substrate. Dead pockets in substrate if disturbed can release hydrogen sulfide which smells like rotten eggs and can cause acute respiratory problems to the fish and other aquatic creatures. I doubt you'll come to this point though.

Most of the time, the aquarium emits earthy smell due to organic materials in the tank but that is not harmful in any way. If he hates the smell, let him compare it to the smell of freshly mowned grass.

Tell him fishkeeping is relaxing. and show him plenty of tank pics that are found here.;)

Not to bring up an old post, but Lupin, if it is his dad he has every right to be concerned about his kid's sleep...

Ask them, "Can I spend my money on whatever I want?" Then you should try to get a tank. They let you spend the money on whatever.
