Just a thought...

if mystery fumes are your fathers main concern then why would he want them in the living room as then he would be "infecting" the entire family.

Mention that if its in your room then you have to keep it clean rather than making it a family affair.

I can tell you what used to work for me: ask for something rediculous first. If you have a buddy with a large python, for example, ask to borrow it for a week. Then bring it home as if you just bought it. "Accidently" let it get loose is always good too. Then see how amicable they'll be to an aquarium full of fish.

LOL. No doubt any humorous connotations are lost on some people.
 
right now i have 9 tanks in my room... lol. My mom will call me when she sees tanks at tag sales or on the side of the road etc.

if it comes down to it i would just take the oppurtunity and put it in the living room
 
fumes are not an issue
ask him if he wants you lugging water through the living room during water changes!!
and SHOW HIM THIS THREAD lol
