Cont. Ughh my parents wont let me get a tank!!!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Is it just me or are you extremely rude to your parents? i would never laugh at my dad in his face and then brag about how you put your dad in his place. if i were you iwould look for information, write an article about it and read it to your parents, no deceitfulness, exaggerating, mocking, nothing just cold hard facts. are you buying the tank or is he? i have to pay for all my tanks (makes you enjoy them more) if he is then you should listen to HIS terms, NOT yours.
I think he should be a little wiser in his choice but HE doesnt have mfk and he obviously thinks about you a lot. thank him, not laugh at his face AND behind his back.

Agree 100% with this....if someone who is still with their folks has this problem and there is no budging on their part, then wait until you have your own place, no need to try to get around it with any deceit or anything like that. Just try to be "good" and inform them with good sources (magazine, books, etc.). Be respectful to them and at some point they might take your hobby seriously

If you read he does state it is him buying the tank so in all fairness the only reason they can/should be able to deny him getting it is if they have some kind of phobia of tanks or just dont like fish.... its his money why cant he do what he wants with it. thats how i have always lived and it has worked out fine.

Once I made a tank smell by dumping 3 packs of fish food into it

for 15 years in the hobby, when I lived at home, my biggest tank was a 90. I thought about how nice it would be to have a 6 footer just about every day during that time. But Mom and Dad said no.

only recently did I move out and the first thing I did was buy a brand new Aqueon 150 gallon tank. I had it set up before I had furniture LOL

sometimes you just have to wait until you are moved away from Mom and dad's rule..

then you can do whatever you want..

and then you'll visit them all the time so they can do your laundry. :nilly: *jokes*

I only read page 1 and 2 and skipped to this page, so i don't know if this has been mentioned before but..... maybe the reason your dad wants it in the living room is because he thinks it'd be kinda neat, and would like to see it. Another possibility is that he may have always wanted one....and the wife has always just said no (can you say majority rules :D ).

Second point is that I actually find the water relaxing...I have a 55 gallon back home, and when i moved away I found it hard to sleep because I there was no *waterfall* sound from the HOB filter...I always left the water level just a tad below the return because I thought it was relaxing. :screwy: You might find the same thing to be true.
That being said, I can't stand when an air pump is going creating bubbles...it's a racket ahaha.

My parents are pretty rigid about how much time and space I use for my fish. I have occupied one whole bay window in the living room with two 10 gallon tanks and a 20 gal, two of the shelves on my bookshelves house newts and a CD rack houses 16 bettas.

But recently my dad started keeping bettas again, and he even said I might be getting a bigger tank...which means I could possibly keep a Green Terror!

Sometimes having a fishkeeping parent is a bad thing. His fish share bloodworms with my fish. He uses a lot of dechlorinator...

He's started to look at my tanks more (which could be a bad thing, when he sees I have something new)

Wow, I love the information. And I agree, maybe I am not being respectful enough of my parents decisions. It is their house anyways and they do pay for the water and electricity bill. But still, waiting till I move out, I'm only in my sophomore year at high-school I still have to live through college. My fish desire meter will be off the charts by then! We'll see how it goes. I just hope to have a larger tank (55>) by the end of summer so I can enjoy it before I go off to college.

Again I totally appreciate these responses. MFK has been a wonderful experience for answering all of my questions (and making me hugely jealous when i see those 6000 gallon tanks etc... )
