My drip is set up that way. Tap to pressure regulator, to carbon filters, to drip emitters, and into all my tanks. I use gravity overflows into a central drain that goes out of the house. I slow drip diluted prime, for peace of mind, even though my area doesnt use chloramines.

How do you make sure your tank doesn't empty itself overflowing? I guess I don't understand the whole concept just yet... can you explain that part in detail? Sorry, I haven't done this before.

here is a basic example of over flow...
pic 1 is water above the overflow and water flowing out of tank...

pic 2 is water below the overflow and no water flowing...

when water is dripped into tank and it raises the water level above the "OVERFLOW" it overflows into what ever you want...waste water, hose, sump what ever you want to plumb to it...in the case of a W/C'r you'd want to plumb it to waste...

I haven't drilled the tank; When the overflow stops because of the water getting too low, doesn't that kill the suction and cause the tank to overflow?

It isn't a siphon it is an OVERFLOW, the only water it releases is the amount that is put in, and it runs by gravity...

If you are going to drill the tank for a wet/dry and use an overflow for that, then you need to drip to the wet/dry and put an overflow on that...basically

When the water level in the tank drops below the bottom of the overflow, doesn't it break the necessary siphon that is required to keep water flowing down to the sump? Here is what I'm thinking about setting up:

I also have another problem; the sump is going to be sitting on the ground, and the only drain I can empty into is a toilet or a sink. Would the best fix for this be just elevating the sump?

Also, would there be any added benefit to having a second drip emitter?

yes the siphon would break in that diagram...
if you are draining above the level of the sump you'll need a pump and a way to control it...

First of all we need to establish what your actual setup is...
so I got:
un-drilled tank...

are you thinking of drilling the tank, what size is the tank?

what kind of filtration do you have?

Alright, I'll post a diagram of the way the tank will eventually be set up. It is really complicated, so if you could help me find a way to simplify it, that would be awesome!

I've already got the overflow box and a Sterilite tub to use as the sump; I don't have any of the plumbing for the sump, drip/drain system, or the drip emitter yet.

***There is also a Fluval FX5 running on the main tank, drawing from the opposite side as the bucket, and feeding the water into the same side as the bucket does.

Simply put, its just a matter of water displacement. In other words, "X" amount of water is put in thru the drip emitters which results in "X" amount of water being drained thru the overflow. The height of the overflow in the sump in a sense regulates how much water will drain out. The overflows will only drain the water up to the point where the water level in you sump drops below the opening of the overflow (which should only happen when your drip system is shut off) Good luck!

If, for whatever reason there is a power failure, the pump back to the tank would stop running; since the drip emitter is powered by water pressure, how would I stop my tank from overflowing?

Also, do you have any ideas on simplifying the system?

Got pics of how you do this?

Sorry no pics its in a hard to get to area. But simply put its a small rubbermaid type container with a 1/4" drip emitter junction plugged into the bottom. On the outside (bottom) of the same container is a short length of 1/4" tubing with a contrl valve that lets gravity drip the premixed solution at your desried rate into your system (I use the same formula that Neoprodigy uses to dilute my prime)
