Controversial solution to keeping large cat fish

Don't eat your pets. Besides, tank raised fish are bleh.

just eat it. its better then giving him up and having it suffer in another tiny tank. its more humane. for just give it to your neighbor to eat.

well id make sure i fed it good food thats for sure and took especially good care of it - which many people would say you should do anyway. i kinda agree with wyldfyas (even though cattleranching probably does more bad than good but thats a different story) point but at the same time, i imagine the percentage of red tailed catfish being sold will live very doom and gloom lives, i mean not your average person can care for such a huge fish-we've all seen the pics of a RTC in a tank that is basically impossible for it to even turn in... at least if you eat it...
not something i'd do though.

Cattle are bred easily, and they are a renewable source. Most species of fish are not.
Not to start an argument at all, I just want to point out that BOTH are an easily renewable resource UNLESS one is talking about a rare species.
Cattle have one calf at a time (very rarely two) and food fish have HUNDREDS of fry at a time.
That's why steak is 3 to 10 dollars a pound (depending on cut) and Tilapia is a dollar to three dollars a pound.
Anyway,
On the topic,
Here's my two cents
If you can:
1. manage to raise them without any meds (someone already mentioned this) for their lifetime.
2. Raise them for a reasonable cost per pound.
3. Handle the idea on an emotional level.

Then fire up the grill!:naughty:

A good point farmed salmon tastes nothing like wild salmon.

Amen to that, but just throw on a little hot sauce.

This conversation has come up several times here even with pics at times. My personal opinion is that I could never eat a fish i raised. Don't buy a fish because it's cool when you dont plan on providing an adequate enviroment for it to live a comfortable life and thrive. Just my .02

Yeah, it's like eating your dog. But I've had dog before and it's pretty good. I would go for it. I mean, what's the harm? It's also pretty cool raise puppies and do the same.

Actually, to be honest, if you did eat your fish I wouldn't tell anyone. They would think you are weird.

NO WAY IS THAT THE SAME. Cattle are bred easily, and they are a renewable source. Most species of fish are not. Look at the blue tang, after Nemo came out they have been in such high demand that now they face extinction in the wild. When they become endangered then people will say that their place is in the aquarium where we can preserve them. But we put them in that state, don't waste the fish's life. Hold off build a pond, then get them.

blue tangs are not endangered because of nemo jsut like clownfish aren't. Fact is large catfish are plentiful for now in the pet trade & one way or he other they will die either they will die to people who buy them for 25(where I'm from for cute babies & can no longer keep them in the 75 gal. or 150 gal. tank they thaught they could once it gets 24-55 inch. or it just keeps eating aaalllll the other fish. There are not enough homes for them at these sizes so one way or other they are going to die.
I see no problem with eating a fish. you get more attached to dogs but hey in some culture they do eat dogs if food is scarce. In some cultures they believe we are savage for eating cows that they raise as sacred. so if you want raise the fish to eat it one day no one here can make YOUR decision.
