Convert 29g fresh to 30b reef?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
what kind of tang does your friend have in there? tangs get too big to be put in a 30g tank and 6fish sounds way overstocked for that size tank, also no one said you couldnt keep some low light softies like certain mushrooms and things like that but if you are trying to keep any kind of sps or an anemone then the T8 WILL NOT work, believe us we are trying to save you money in the long run if these are the types of things you are wanting to keep then you have to get the better spectrum lighting anemones and sps are the most light demanding organisms we keep in aquariums and they need the best you can provide in order to thrive, there are other areas where you can scrounge around and save but lighting is really not one of those areas if you are already wanting to keep sps and you get the T8 system that money will just be wasted once you get those corals in your tank and realize that its not sufficient, what kinds of corals does your friend have, there are kinds that are ok in lower lighting but you would have to take this into account when thinkng about stocking, also some corals such as gorgonians dont require lighting at all and i think the orange ones are very attractive so you could look into something like that as well and like anthony said finding used stuff is a great way to get good quality items for cheaper prices GOOD LUCK

oh an this is the very reason i put my reef tank on hold was because of the cost of everything and time required but if you find good deals and take things SLOW you can create an awesome reef tank that THRIVES

The link doesn't give enough info about the lights so I can't help you on that. My guess is that you might beable to keep softies alive with it.
Sarah88 is right but my name is James.

good decision anthony im sure you wont regret it and it will save you money in the long run to be happy with your first buy, and how many gph does that filter do? for saltwater you want a filter that does AT LEAST 10x turnover, i was planning on using the emperor 400 on my 20g if i had went saltwater in addition to a koralia 1, saltwater needs ALOT of filtration and flow (you dont want any algae settling and growing on your corals) i would look into filters that have flow in the range of the emperor 400, not sure if thats the best filter or not but would suggest any filter thats around that strength

It only has 200 GPH... idk which filter i need considering ive been told no to get the canister..

For powerhead im planning on getting a single Hydor koralia 1 and pointing it directly into the middle of the tank on the rocks probably, is that correct?

yes 1 koralia one with be fine flow wise and just should be placed where there is less flow, like if filter is behind rocks creating flow back there then aim powerhead to flow across front of rocks, theres no one position to put the powerhead just depends where its needed in the individual tank just position it to where you want and then once you have fish in there if there is any area where waste is accumulated more than others adjust the powerhead to flow there so that no dead spots are created, and you could probably use the filter you have and then add another one about the same strength (so you still get around 400gph of flow) or there are some cool hob refugiums that would help filter as well and also can be used to produce copepods for your fishes to eat :) someone showed me a really nice one that wasnt that expensive but now i can remember what site it was on but im sure you could find something like that if you searched online, it was like 30 or 40 for the fuge but then i think you still had to buy pump for it.....

i dont know if i said this already but you can save a fortune on rock if you buy dry rock from marco rock and just get a little piece of live rock from somewhere and it will all become the same thing with time, even if you buy "fully cured" live rock online there will be some die off during shipping so you will still have to recure it in your tank but if that price includes shipping then that is a pretty decent price, shipping is usually where those online places become just as expensive as your LFS

oh no that is a phosban reactor what i was talking about is a HOB refugium which is where you can keep some kind of macroalgae that will help take nitrates out of your water

Well they say it's precured but should be cured again which i have no idea how to go about, it also is out of stock, but then again this isn't happening for a while till i get every single thing down... The LFS sells Fiji for $8 or $9 a lb which is ALOT to me, that would be like $300 if i wanted to fill my tank! I was thinking about what you said also and getting maybe only 5lbs of live rock and probably like 40-50lbs of dry rock, will that work? I really dont want to waste more then about $100 on rock...

Another question is spots on a tank like this, looks like algae i think, i see it at the LFS alot on their tanks, is it normal? Or are you suppose to scrub it off?
