Converting a 20ft cistern into an underground eel pond.

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I agree that opinions vary, but I tend to go with this ^ one. Clinging to a metal ladder after slithering through a narrow manhole, and needing a headlamp to maybe see any fish? Hard pass! The whole thing has a bit of a "Silence of the Lambs" kind of vibe to it.

"It takes the Massivore and drops it into the water..."

Ill probably hang an LED panel on the wall when I go in, but there’s too much condensation to make me feel safe about leaving anything electric that isn’t waterproof in there. Also I’ve added wood ladder rungs to the wall so I fit in the hole better. I’ll add handles later to make it even easier.

Maybe underwater swimming pool lights?

I was going to suggest a deck at one end, but just noticed you have plans for a cinder-block-supported walkway, which would likely be a lot easier to achieve in that awkward spot. It's suddenly starting to sound a lot more appealing. Still a little creepy, though...:)

I assume you will use a submersible pump to lift water out during water changes? How about filtration?

I have difficulty getting my wife to feed my tanks with dry and frozen food when I am away at work. I can just imagine if I had a set-up like this...:OMG:

Underwater lights are an option for sure. Yea I have a sump pump for it and I just ran a few airlines down today. Filtration currently will just be some big sponge filters. It’ll be about 4,000 gallons where I’ll keep it filled so I think it’ll stay decently clean just from automatic water changes with the rain.

Part of the appeal is just how low maintenance it should be once I get everything in place.

maybe im wrong but does anyone know how fish deal with vitamine deficiency from no uv light? I would think they would need it for their keratine scales and more.

How do they get those vitamines or dont they need them?
I would guess that most eels get them when they are young before traveling to deep water and since they grow the most at a young age. But how would baby fish do if kept in the dark from the beginning?

How deep is the pond/well?

It’s 8 feet to the bottom. I’ve never heard of UV light being an issue for fish. Most aquarium fish are never exposed to it with modern lighting either.

I don't get the appeal of keeping fish in these underground tanks. No natural light for diurnal cycle, seems cruel and pointless.
