Im trying to get my convicts to breed. What are a few must haves as far as tank conditions, water temperatures, ect. are concerned?

I noticed my convicts freak out as soon as you walk into the room so I taped a towel around the tank to cover it. What else can I do to get them in the mood? :screwy::confused::)

nth .. just do nth ..

convicts breed any where any time as long as there is a male and female and water ..

ask me dude they breed @ any water

I totally agree, they breed even when the tank is full of fish lol.

Maybe you should get yourself to be seen by them more often so they don't freak out. Remove the towel, it will only make things worse.

I can't get my convicts to breed either :(
Found free-swimming fry with my first pair in two weeks...my second pair didnt breed after 3 weeks so I bought 3 more convicts and still nothing :O

change 50% of the water weekly, 80F temperature, clay flower pot, i always have fry in my convict tank and there are 40+ juvies and adults in there

"freaking out" .. more hideing spots. sounds like they are insecure. lol and the obviouse make sure they are indeed a pair. good water quality, good food = convict babies. as long as your water is good, and they are well conditioned they will breed. I agree take the towel off and offer more hidieng spots for them. more nesting site options as well for them. Once they settle down and don't spazz out on you I'de bet you'll see fry in no time.

this set up was the money maker for me.

82F.

lots of hiding spaces.

little bit of substrate they can move.

feed 2-3 times a day

dont have a lot of flow in the tank. i.e. lots of power heads and super filtration. sponge filters are ur friend.

have absolutely no other species of fish in the tank.

heres my set up, i had my first spawn about 2 weeks after the tank got set up.
i have had about 3 spawns now.

Thanks for the info guys.

I took down the towel covering the tank. Guess it doesn't make much sense if the fish aren't even used to me yet. I added more stuff to offer some more hiding places, the tank even looks better now.:nilly:
The only thing I cant offer them right now is substrate. If I want to continue paying the bills it'll have to wait.:irked:

Here it is. The fish even seem happier now.
