they don't always. the first 2 spawns i ever had were completely successful and it was in a 15 gallon!

i just sold some of my convicts 2 days ago. it was way to crowded in there! no body died and everyone ate at feeding time! hundred little mouths at the water line all at once was pretty cool to watch!

i think i made the right choice though..to sell some:)

Good that gives me some hope then, so I dont have to move them all around.

just follow what i did, read post # 9 on page 1. you will be bullet proof. only move them if its a last resort. i never had to but u might have some pissed off convicts!

i am plaining on putting about 12 convicts into a 55gal, would this be 2 many breeders in one tank?

i had 8 in a 15 gallon when i was breeding them.... lol..

im not saying this is a good thing.. but it worked out fine for me.. i had about 100 successful large fry before i sold everything..
you will most likely be ok as long as theres hiding spaces for everyone.

having 50/50 male/female from different parents will help as well.

i am currently in the process of moving my cons around right now the pair that have fry are being too much of good parents and hogging 3/4 of a 4ft tank so im moving my texas in with my jags so i can put another 1m 2f cons into another tank and 2 cons into my main tank with the jags an texas,

i had lots an lots of hiding spaces but they just scare other fish away so they just take up too much of the tank

my convict breeding tank was all convicts. i mentioned this earlier in post # 9 when describing conditions for breeding. convicts don't get along with other species of fish when their trying to breed or have bred already or in large numbers, they barely get along with each other.

Purchase 3 tank dividers made for 55's....Place 4 cons in each section....Once pairs start bonding, take the excess out..........

looks a lot better for breeding and overall, one suggestion for the future. i would of used smaller substrate; so even the weakest smallest mother could dig a hole, also fry occasionally dig through the substrate to find food and shelter. before i started my breeding operation i was told to use sand since its very soft and can be moved around even by the fry! i have even observed the fry and their mother putting sand in their mouth's and spitting it out! however, im sure a larger convict would be able to move the stuff ur using, so its not all bad.
