Convict Breeding Conditions

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
wow the male is huge!

as for the substrate its not a must. but my convict parents sure like to dig in it. and it will hold food for the young fry.

the parents make little trenches and the fry go in them, it seems that these little holes/trenches collect food that falls in them. its almost as if the parents make little feeding bowls for their young. they dig some of these holes near the bottom of the drift wood and rock. its like a mini cave basically for the fry and the parents occasionally. they probably do this in the wild as well.

they will eventually spawn for you i currently have 6females and 2 males in my convict tank they currenly have 1 set spawned and free swiming fry altho i think they will eat most of them its the downside ofr leaving the fry in the tank they eat like 95 / 99% of the young, but its life in a tank

in a proper tank with proper conditions for breeding them they don't eat there fry, mine didn't at least. i got almost hundred 1/4'' - 1/2'' (8 week old) fry swimming around they look just like their parents now! :nilly:

Im experiencing my first batch of con fry, they are 8 days old (eggs hatched last saturday) Had to move all the other fish out of the tank, they were taking a beating from the father.

I did not go out of my way to breed them, had the female a little more than 2 days before the spawning. The fry should make some nice FM food

Wow everyone here has luck =[

Guess I'll try to feed my convicts more...haven't been constantly feeding a few times everyday since I have 5 and dont want poop
(no thread hijack intended)

no luck involved, just 10 mins of research and $100 for the fish and tank/setup.

they were about 1 week hatching,
then saturday / sunday just in the cave

then today well you can see :)

im half thinking about moving the rest of the convicts out of the tank, but that would kinda defeat the object of having a species only tank

I've been hearing alot of bumps in the night. Fish hitting the lid and whatnot. During the day both females are often tucked away in the little nooks and crannies while the male struts around the tank like he owns the place. is he to aggressive or is this normal behavior? I have noticed the female's orange bellys have brightened up some.

i noticed that everyone has black convicts...my first pair that had fry were also black. do pink convicts not breed as easily?
