Convict?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
She's very pretty! Good for you for saving her. And she'll make a great pet. I agree about maybe not getting her a male. Males can be pretty aggressive and she might not be able to handle it.

Poor girl. Tail was definatly hacked off at a young age. Ive seen plenty of natural defects and this is not a natural one.
She must have had a very tramatizing youth, but at least she can be happy now. She deserves a good home. Careful not to house her with anything too aggressive or nippy because shes not going to be as quick.

how can you tell? i was looking for pics of birth defects vs cutting..but i cant find any

I might just plant the tank a bunch and put in some guppies...( i breed my own) and let her have fun with it^_^ if i cant find a suitable tank mate for her cute little self.

oh yeah can i expect her colors to stay like this? or will that bright red fade?

bump....can any one tell me how much she will change? will her colors stay the same?
and what to expect when owning these guys...iv done some more reading sens iv got her home but want other impute....

watching her in the tank at the store she held her own among the jags and other convicts crammed in her tank, keeping a corner clear for her self..so despite her tail she seems to be able to hold her own

..and can someone tell me how to tell the difference between cut fish and birth defects? ..cant seem to find much my self

I'm not able to tell you whether it was born like that or if it sustained an injury at a young age.

I know that some hatcheries/breeders will cut the tails off fish intentionally and market them as "Heart-Shaped", it is a cruel practice.

I doubt that this is one of those, If I had to guess I would say the tail was damaged/destroyed early on in the development of this fish.

It does make her cool and unique. And I like that.

For that reason I would advise against finding a male and breeding this fish. Convicts do breed very easily, a lot of people say "just add water" and they will breed. The problem is convicts, like most CA cichlids, have the potential to get violent toward each other when breeding, I had a very nice female con get ripped to shreds post spawn. She had her tail bitten off, and it may never heal.

Another reason I would advise against breeding them is they will almost certainly get violent with any other tankmates when they breed. A pair of Cons will fend of fish 2 or 3 times their own size in defense of their spawn point.

She should not lose any of her color, in fact, as long as you have her on a good diet, her colors may get more intense.

They are a fun fish.

Be advised:depending on her size any guppies you decide to put in with her may become snacks.

thank you so much!....
..yeah i was not sure on the male thing...was going to give it time but now im thinking no for that.

Im glad to here her color will stay or get better ^_^
and any guppies that went in would be for a snack...when she caught my eye a few months ago i started reading up on them.
shes around 2 inches right now, and eating like a little pig, despite her tail she gets around as if nothing was wrong.

Is she now by herself in the 35g?

yes, though i might switch her in to my 22 gallon and give the 35 to my sculpins.

updates!! shes a little eating monster^_^ she has so much color^_^

Won't take long before she rules the roost.:D

Cons are one of my favorite fish and this one is great. I don't like her tail but she has awesome colors. You could always add another female. Wouldn't have to worry about having 500 fish in a year or so and they would both have nice color.
