Recently saw this vid and loved how to filter basically disappeared. I have a 20 long and want to do the exact same so my main question is could I put some bio balls behind it? That way I could just use some from my other filters and cycle instantly, maybe add a small air stone underneath the bio balls? Also would this type of filter be sufficient for a fairly stocked tank. I plan to do 1 f8 puffer and at least 5 bumblebee gobies. ( ik brackish my LFS sells them in fw so I'll need to slowly add salt over the weeks)

Surprisingly those matten style filters handle a fairly decent bio-load.

Could I put cycled media behind it with an air stone under the media like the ceramic rings to add to it? Or would that be a waste?

You can. I have a thread recently where I just converted my 180g to hmf. I have three large bags of biomax behind my foam to help it get seeded with the plan to eventually remove it. I have played air stones under the bags to ensure strong aeration for the biomax.

Awesome cuz that's my plan to have media and squeeze a heater behind it, basically try to hind everything with low maintenance and really no chance of waking up to water on the floor.

Where are you planning to get your stuff from? If you are in the US I would go with Swiss Tropicals. The service is awesome, their foam is top notch, and the jetlifters are great. Check out my thread for some pros/cons I noted but also read through the website for optimal setup.
