Corner HMF - Powerhead or Air lift Tube

I have a small fish room of about 22 tanks (under 40G) and have used the Jehmco LPH60 linear pump and then replaced it with a LPH80 linear pump. Both air pumps are very quiet and were kept in an open closet in the fish room. I don't know that you would need to keep these model linear air pumps outdoors due to noise levels.

I suggest contacting Jehmco directly to speak with John or another expert there to explain what your plans are and they would be more than happy to recommend the appropriate air pump.

The biggest issue with choosing the appropriate air pump is the depth you have to get the proper flow from your air lifts AND the type and number of air stones you plan on operating.

In your 1st post you mentioned something about using air lifts on the overhead sumps. Are those air lifts planned to just circulate the flow in the sump or are you trying to move the water from the main tank UP to the sumps?

The plan/hope was to move the water to these sumps. They are supplemental filtration, the Ultima II is the primary filtration for sure. I will definitely look into these and appreocapp your feedback. If it's quiet enough to stay in the house that's even better.

It is difficult to lift water (cheaply) to any appreciable height above the surface of the water so you would be better off with using a water pump or a power head to move water from the aquarium to the over head sumps.

I have no experience with Ultima filters but if your plan is to keep it outdoors in an environment that has the potential to get cold or freeze, you may want to reconsider that idea. Hopefully someone with Ultima filter experience will comment on that plan.

The Ultima will be inside. The only reason for the airpump outside would be due to noise if required. The lifting would be minimal, I would say 20" at absolute most.

You can keep the jehmco indoors, it will probably be quieter than the pump running your ultimate. I’m using an Ultima/hmf combo on my 535g. Either method for powering works. I ended up using two eheim compacton pumps. I went with the eheim because the tube coming out of the HMF is submerged versus sticking half out. Also, between them and my reeflo they generate enough heat that I don’t need heaters. Temp in the summer is like 80 and now in the winter is 77 and that is with running a cold water drip. It would probably cost more to be running air and have my heaters running.

I purchased a Hygger airpump to run my big tanks it stones currently. It is wicked quiet and pushed a lot of air. So I think I'm going to run it on my 2 100G tanks with the corner filter with a lift tube. The big tank, I am going to run Jebao DCS 3000 pumps as they are adjudtable and I don't need many GPH to my overhead sumps I'm going to run. They drop down to 292GPH I believe, all the way up to 900. These will be hidden in the main tank behind 2 corner filters . Which, I need to talk to Stephan again so I can plan accordingly and purchase come January.

Your problem will be finding a pump that fits behind the corner filters. I only did a 9in diameter for my hmf based on Steffan’s recommendations. This leaves very little space. If you follow the other literature on hmf like the German sites you’ll have a much larger diameter and the pump won’t be a problem.

Sounds like youre leaning towards a powerhead. Either way works, and I do know that folks that use hmf on larger tanks do tend to use power heads. Good luck with it.
