Daaaaamnnn!!! Serious bichir envy right now.

Two of my sp. dabolas still settling in. I can finally see some markings on the really light one. The light sp. dabola is really taking a long time to settle in.

Daamn!!! That female is still one of the nicest Bic his I've ever seen. Can't wait till her contrast is back to full potential.

Are your Dabolas shy? Man... mine sure is. Always wanting to hide behind another fish and haven't seen it eat since I've gotten it 2-3 mos. ago

One of my dabolas used to be shy in the sense that it took her a while to eat when I got her and was a bit flighty. Since adding the garnet sand and finally "zero-ing" in on how I feed, all of my bichirs eat very very well.

I feed my bichirs every other day. I like to feed my bichirs as much as they want to eat. I always noticed there were some that had little appetite or didn't eat at all or ate sporadically. It frustrated me to no end because I wanted all my bichirs to eat. So then I tried feeding my bichirs with the lights off as some had suggested. I noticed about the same amount of food was being eaten BUT (there is a HUGE BUT), now the shyer eaters were eating while some of my "big eaters" were not eating as much!! Now I do the following and the amount of tilapia I feed has doubled!!

1.) Condition the fish to know when food is coming. How? Through an external trigger. Like what? Turn off a filter, turn off a bubbler, turn off the powerheads, right before feeding etc..... I turn off my powerheads before I feed and now my fish "recognize" feeding time. Make sure it's an external trigger unique to feeding. When I do water changes I turn off the lights on one side of the tank and put in a big pump, again the fish react differently as they are conditioned to know when I do that it means, less water in the tank.

2.) Do water changes on non feeding days. Less stress and less likely to ruin a bichir's appetite.

3.) Feed you bichirs as much as they will eat with the lights on.

4.) Then feed your bichirs with the lights off BUT keep the ambient lights on (leave room lights on)

5.) Then feed some more with the tank lights off and ambient lights off.

You will be amazed. All of my bichirs eat incredibly well since I started doing this. Even my shyest bichirs. Some bichirs adjust very well to aquarium lights while others are still in wild mode and will feel much more comfortable eating in the dark.

6.) And lastly, change to garnite sand if possible....... there's just some (assumption) properties in that stuff that make bichirs happy and bigger eater, not to mention you get to see them at their "potential".....I would take it as far as saying changes behavioral wise.

Hope this helps!!
