Couple photos of my RTC

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Looking good. Is that cat living with anything else?

Yes, he has two tank mates as of right now.

7" Albino Oscar and 6-7" (Hard to Measure) Venezuelan Pike Cichlid. (Or thats what I was told it was, looks like some sort of Vene. variant at the very least).

They are all buds for now, obviously the RTC will be pulled long before he can make a meal out of either as I don't want that. The Pike is really the only one I'd worry about, but he is faster than greased lightning.

Thanks.

And dang, I guess the 4 whisker question is more complicated than I thought. I have looked on Google and here and not found anything other than they should have 3 pairs of Whiskers, nothing stating why one might only have 2 pairs.

It doesn't seem to bother him so.... Maybe four is his magic number.

Don't search for deals on a big tank, make a pond. Much cheaper and can go way bigger.

Might be a birth defect. Mine has 6.....check the missing two whiskers. If its gone, but you see the stumps, then it was there, but got cut so short past the nerve that it didn't grow back. but if it has no trace of the missing two whiskers, then a birth defect....A pretty cool one if you ask me.

Oh yea, he is fine. I was just curious if it was maybe some sort of hybrid or other variant of the RTC. Either way he ain't going anywhere, one of my favorite fish ever.

And I will likely get/make a pond, I just use the term "tank" & "home" loosely. Unless I can find a steal on a 6x3 - 8x4 size tank I wouldn't bother anyway because anything smaller would only last a little longer than the current home. And the odds of finding a CHEAP tank that size is like winning the lotto. So most likely he'll get a stock pond, round pool, Rubbermaid tub (Unlikely as they aren't that big), or I'll build a frame and put a pond liner in it.

Likely the last option so I can make it the size I want.

No knubs that I have ever seen, or trace of them and I've had him since he was a wee 3" baby. I'll look close tonight and see if I can see anything. You may be right on the birth defect thing.

Bump because I am noticing most peoples RTC have 6 whiskers but mine only has 4. Is this normal? There is no evidence there were ever two others and it's been the same since I got him. They are really long now, so I assume if more were going to grow out they would have by now.

Anyone know?

at least yours got four and they are symmetrical..... One of my RTCs have three whiskers (the seller sold me for special price ... i did not know what the catch was until much later ^^ i have a feeling that the flabby soft gill part is also original) ... you can zoom on pix i provided a high resolution one

PS: i gave up waiting for them to grow ;)
