What's the deal with ad's on craigslist almost always being wrong? I've been keeping an eye on craigslist for a 75g and a 125g tank. I went to pick up a tank that was advertised as a 75g, but when I got there, it turned out to be a 55g tank. Since then, I'm seeing the same thing, ad after ad. I've learned to email the person and ask for tank dimensions.

Here's an example... I email a guy about a 160 gallon plexiglass tank for $250. It comes with sump, hoses and pumps. I wondered if it was too good to be true. So I emailed asking what the dimensions are and if it was a diy plexiglass tank or a commercial acrylic. He responded back that the dimensions were "6' long, 2' deep, and appx 3' high". So I asked, "I think those dimensions would make it 260 gallons, right?". He responds with "I made a mistake....its 72" wide X 24" high X 24" deep ". Well, that would still make it a 180g tank. He only wants $250 for the tank, so I'm wondering if it's a scam.

This morning I find an ad for a 90 gallon. But once again, the ad is wrong and it's a 75gallon. I'm looking for a 75, but this one is way over priced. I guess I'll keep looking.

Just wanted to vent. LOL

Anyway... What do you think a good craigslist price is for the following tank sizes?

75g
125g
180g glass
180g acrylic

I hear ya on the adds being wrong. I called on a 100g and asked for dimensions--turned out to be a 55g. I have had good luck on craigslist though. I bought a 90g(just the tank) for $45, A 75g complete(stand, tops, canister) for $90. I also found a deal on e-bay--180g(glass) with a cracked bottom for $60. I found a deal on the mfk market place as well---180g(glass) with stand, glass for tops, gravel, and 2)ac110's for $200... My latest deal I passed to a friend of mine---380g in wall with stand--$100(Still kicking myself over that one,but when you're broke you're broke)... Deals are out there. You just have to sort out the BS...

Good luck in your hunt,
----Chris

The way used tank should go is always $1 per Gallon. And if its barely used mint condition then add $10

I found an ad in Atascadero for a 50gal with stand for $10. OMG, I was going to Morro Bay anyways thats why I searched CL for the fun of it.
Had to ask and make sure the tank was good and that it wasnt a typo. Sure enough it was legit and when I got there the guy was like, "Man, I mustve posted too cheap huh, because everyone was calling me for the tank. I won't charge you any more but what should I have posted it for?" So I told him same thing, $1 per gallon. He was cool, even helped me load it up, awesome kid.

I saw an ad for a 100g tank and stand for $70. I asked her the dimensions but she said she didn't have a measuring tape. The pics made it look like a standard 5 ft long tank so I drove 30 miles to see it. When I got there, it was a 60 gallon 4ft tank. The wood on the stand was peeling too but you couldn't tell from the pics and she didn't mention it either. I kept telling her it was a 60g but she kept insisting it was 100g. She had enough balls to tell me, "Its 100g and another guy is coming to check it out. Take it or leave it." I wanted to kick her in the shins but instead I just said "I'll leave it" and walked away.

Works the other way too though, I found a 75 gallon with stand for $70. Went and picked it up, when I got it home it didn't look quite right to me so I measured it. Turned out it was a 90 gallon. Made my day. Tanks can be deceiving when they aren't on their stands I guess.

ive had it go both ways...i went to look at a 90g that turned out to be a 75g...guy kept insisting it was 90g...he "knew" because he carried the buckets doing water changes...i bought it anyways for $100 came with a mint stand, two lights, and the glass tops

then i saw a 180 gallon posted with duel overflows and a stand for $200...when i went to check it out i thought it looked bigger than a 180 but i just thought o well...i measured it when i got home and it turned out to be a 220g

$1 per gallon if it's the tank only. I will pay more if it comes with a good stand and lights, pumps. I got a used 450, stand, two 55 gallon sumps, and two pumps for $1K. Can't beat that deal at over $2 a gallon.

No way you're getting a 125g for $125, whether it's just the tank or not. Nor should you. The $1/gallon idea should only apply to 55g tanks and smaller.

This $1/gallon thing is getting carried away, kinda like the 1 inch of fish/gallon idea years back.

I can buy 55g tanks new at PetSmart for $55 when on sale.

Today I turned down a 120g for $100 cash. I didn't want it because the dimensions were 60" L x 18" W x 25" H.
