oh and to answer your question. your basically raising a fish and selling it later which many people do. you may never sell your fish though. and if you don't then you will have to give it to a shop or keep it till death (naturally or not).
people here catch barracuda fingerlings from the boat peers, raise them and release them. and do it again with new fingerlings. since true barracudas are non existant in the aquarium hobby this is what alot of locals do. so far nothing disturbed, including the fact that all fish are wild and we merely "borrow" them for a time and they go back into the environment. this is a RARE exception to the rule of never releasing aquarium pets into the wild as it has worked since before Elvis embarrassed us and the only negative impact on our OCEAN life is construction/erosion and commercial fish related.
The size of the fish doesn't matter to its value. if someone want it, they will pay what they are willing to pay for it. but just for perspective, arowanas easily go for $60-100 over 12" but even 2 foot + arowanas are sold for no more then that.
Nobody wants to pay for an oscar on craigslist (hawaii). as many people give them for free (usually with a tank purchase) and you can catch them.
and then people successfully sell datnoids for $300+ (but imo they just look like boring ol fish). however they are businessmen and most advertise on more sites than just craigslist. no doubt their success comes mostly from elsewhere.
