crazy p diet question

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
try to keep water as clean as possible by doing more water changes or up your filtration if it's barely doing its job right. that and proper diet would help bring the color out and help with the growth.
if you are just got 9 more then your 90g will be too small to keep all of them.

In reference to the color aspect here: I added 3 6'' rbp's to my shoal and they had no color whatsoever, but they had been in a very tiny tank(25?!g) at my local lfs; for who knows how long. It took about 3 weeks and they are just now starting to show some red on their bellies but are quite purplish too. I have been feeding them: tilapia, trout, shrimp, shrimp pellets, zuchinni, spinach. I don't know if that amount of stress can be reversed quickly; and who knows what they were being fed.

The 9 are in a different tank. I wasn't thinking about the possibility that people hadn't seen my other thread or I would have mentioned that.

As far as water quality, I have 2 magnum 350's on the tank along with another 2400gph in circulation to keep the mes in the water column until the filters get it. I change 4-5g of water daily and gravel vac a needed. I spend 30+ hours a week doing upkeep on my tanks.

all those current in your tank could be slowing down the growth.
most of the food intake probably were being used to keep them stay swimming in the 2400gph current in a 4ft tank. just some thought...

I made sure to leave 'dead" space for them to not always fight the current but I still don't think I'm coming close to currents in the Amazon.lol

well that's kind of different, you have 2400gph in a 18" wide tank and I'm sure the current is coming out of a power head so it's more narrow sort of a jet like current while the current in the amazon is over a much much much wider opening and much much more gentle.
also not every inch of amazon is having the same amount of current, there are many areas are like swamps were current is very minimum and those areas are where juvi fish hangout.
I have a AC110 outputs 935gph and it'll blow any juvi piranhas against the glass if I use it in a 4ft long tank and uproot all my plants. I also used koralia 4 which outputs 1200gph in a 4ft 75g tank and it's complete different as compare to the AC110 because the output from the koralia 4 is at a much wider angle and a lot more gentle than AC110.
a fish wants to stay in the current of AC110 will burn much more energy as compare to swimming in the current of koralia 4

ok here's the break down of it. I have 1300GPH koralia type, wide dispersment, power head that runs down the front of the tank, and 2 other direct jet PHs that are pushing current against the flow of the other one. It's not one 2400gph direct stream wirling my tank in a whirlpool. It' a very thought out tried and true setup. I'm not drawing a diagram but lets just say that if you can properly create flow in a 220g reef then doing it in a p tank isn't an issue. I spend several days after installing all my PH's tinkering and making little 1/2 in adjustments until everything is properly angled and adjusted

I don't think piranha and/or most fresh water setup requires the type of current a reef tank would require but what do I know, I'm not a marine guy.
all those extra current in the tank are making the fish burning up more food intake to stay still as compare to some fish that don't need to do the same amount of work and can put more food intake into growing.
just trying to think of what might have slowed down the growth of your piranha as compare to your friend's. but again, the grow of your piranhas could be normal and your friend's are not from all those fatty food.
